AUSTIN, James Arnold ""Pepsie"", 60, of Natural Bridge Station, died Monday, Ma y 2, 1994 in Roanoke Memorial Hospital. Born in Rockbridge County on November 11, 1933, he was the son of the late Paul David and Bessie Pearl Thomas Austin. He was employed by Burlington Industries for twenty-three years and was a member and Trustee in Glenwood Pentecostal Holiness Church. He was preceded in death by two sons, Danny Arnold Austin and Donnie Ray Austin. Survivors include his wife, Serena Thomas Austin, Natural Bridge Station; daughter, Frances Austin, Buchanan; daughter and son-in-law, Susie and Buck Huffman, Natural Bridge Station; sons, Gregory Austin and Frankie Austin, both of Natural Bridge Station; two sons and daughters-in-law, Michael and Linda Austin, Natural Bridge Station and Curtis and Donna Austin, Vesuvius; five sisters, Margaret Collins, Fairfield, Minnie Cochran, Roanoke, Ruth Walker, Natural Bridge Station and Edith Wallace, Natural Bridge; Nellie Austin, Lexington; five brothers, Earl Austin, Erskine Austin, Oral Austin, Lewis Austin, all of Natural Bridge Station; Ben Austin, Glasgow; two grandchildren; a special friend, Betty Brummer. Funeral services will be at 2 :00 p.m. Thursday, May 5 at Glenwood Pentecostal Holiness Church with the Rev. Claude Floyd and the Rev. Aaron Wilhelm officiating. BALLOU, Lorraine Elizabeth, 96, of Roanoke, died Monday, May 2, 1994, at Friendship Manor Convalescent Center. Surviving are a niece and nephew-in-law, Virginia and Kenneth Carter; a great-nephew, S. Knox Carter, all of Pittsburgh, Pa.; a great-nephew and niece-in-law, Gordon Carter and Hannah Twaddell, Charlottesville; and a number of close friends. Miss Ballou was preceded in death by her parents, Henry Othello and Clementine Bell Ballou and eight brothers and sisters. Born in Jonesville, Va., she attended school in Norton and moved with her family to Southwest Roanoke in the 1930's. For sixty years, their home on Laburnum Avenue was a center of hos pitality for their friends. Many will also remember her devoted care of her mother and sisters, and in later years of her brothers, ``Mack'' and Lawrence. Miss Ballou was a member of First Presbyterian Church for over fifty years and was an honorary member of it's Women of the Church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church Special Projects Fund, or a favorite charity. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday from Evergreen Cemetery. BARKER, Benjamin G., 73, of Marion, died Monday, May 2, 1994 at his home in Marion. He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia B. Barker. He is survived by one daughter, Judith B. Seaton, Piney Flats, Tenn.; two sons, Michael G. Barker, Abingdon, and Patrick Barker, Panama City, Fla.; one brother, Jack Barker, Marion; four sisters, Edith Groseclose, Clearwater, Fla., Lois McCormick, Orlando, Fla., Frances Killinger and Iris Catron, both of Marion; nine grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 4 pm. in the Mario Baptist Church, with Dr. William A. Slater and the Rev. Roby Eastridge officiating. private entombment will follow at Rose Lawn Cemetery. BATES, Jack E., 55, of Roanoke, died Sunday, May 1, 1994, at his home. He was a U.S. Army veteran and retired after 23 years of service with the Water Department, City of Roanoke. He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Glenn Bates. Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, Robert (Kirk) and Kathy C. Bates, Rocky Mount; one daughter and son-in-law, Jacquelyn B. and Scott D. Lyle, Roanoke; two grandchildren, Alisha Renee Lyle and Kathrine Nicole Bates; one brother, Billy Bates, Roanoke; and one sister, Betty Ann Weaver, Roanoke. DILLON, Jane Angell, 85, of Boones Mill, died Monday, May 2, 1994 at Franklin Memorial Hospital, Rocky Mount, Va. She was the daughter of the late George Washington Angell and Laura Bussey Angell. She was the wife of the late Charles Lewis Dillon Jr., who died September 20, 1980 and was preceded in death by a daughter, Joanna Dillon. FARMER, Robert Garland, 95, of Roanoke, passed away Sunday, May 1, 1994, at his home at Friendship Manor. Born June 2, 1898, at Evington, Va., in Campbell County, Va., he was the son of the late Eugenia Fields Farmer and Cornelius White Farmer. He attended Hickory Grove Methodist Church in Bedford, Va. and Evington Methodist Church in Evington, Va. He was a member of the Methodist Church and attended Edgewood Christian Church, located in the Edgewood Community, where he was a resident for 60 years. He retired 31 years ago from the Norfolk & Western Railway, w here he worked for 40 years at the N & W Shops. He was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Lula Mae Martin Farmer; two daughters, Frances Farmer Hicks, and Susie Mae Farmer; two granddaughters, Pamela Kingerly and Carol Farmer. Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Margaret F. and Donald Hunt, Daleville, Sallie F. and Bill K. Cundiff, Vinton; three sons and daughters-in-law, Thomas L. (Dick) and Barbara Z. Farmer, Roanoke, Linsey (Lindy) and Marie F. Farmer, Catawba, Robert (Bob) and Emma Jean Farmer, Hollins; 13 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson. Church in Lexington, former member of Jr. Ovam Lodge, an active and faithful member of Lauderdale A.R.P. Church where he served as church deacon for 40 years, and was retired from Burlington Industries after 43 years of service. PHILLIPPI, Rose Litz, 101, of Rural Retreat, died Monday, May 2, 1994, at her residence. She was the widow of Elbert Clay Phillippi, and a member of the Rural Retreat United Methodist Church. Surviving are two daughters and son-in-law, Ruby M. Phillippi, Rural Retreat, Virginia and John Black, Nashville, Tenn.; three grandsons, Richard Black, Charles Black, both of Smyrna, Tenn., Donald Black, Joliet, Tenn.; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews also survive. VARNEY, Everett Ray, 64, of Roanoke, died Monday, May 2, 1994 at his home. He was born October 31, 1929. He was a man of honor and courage and was a treasure to all who knew and loved him. Mr. Varney co-founded Varney Electric Company in 1955. Ray has been a life-long member of Cave Spring Baptist Church, where he served as a Sunday School teacher, Trustee, Deacon, and was honored as Deacon Emeritus. His family gives praise and glory to God for the life that Ray Varney lived.
