GROUP HONORS STUDENTS

Scott Carty spent last summer working with children - most of them Hispanic - in Boston inner-city neighborhoods on a church mission trip.

Carty, a senior at Northside High School, helped form Bible clubs for the youngsters. He was moved by conditions in the neighborhoods, the homeless shelters and grimy buildings.

Northside's guidance coordinator, Esther Johnson, said Carty is a top student academically, ranking first in his class with four other students.

Teachers, however, most often speak of his character rather than his grades, Johnson said.

"He has that rare ability to get along with everyone. He always looks for the good in people and situations,'' said one teacher.

Along with nine other Roanoke Valley high school seniors, Carty was honored Monday night with brotherhood and sisterhood awards by the Roanoke area chapter of the National Conference of Christians and Jews.

Recipients are recognized for their efforts to eliminate racism, reduce prejudice in general and improve human relations in their high school communities.

Another winner, Brian Short, a senior at William Fleming High School, was honored for his sensitivity to cultural diversity and willingness to help others.

Short's mother is of Vietnamese descent, which has made Short more aware of cultural differences, said William Cleveland, guidance coordinator at William Fleming.

In his applications for college admission, Short wrote several essays about ethnic and racial relations.

Short tutors students in several subjects and demonstrates his values in everyday situations, Cleveland said.

Wendy Robison, a senior at Cave Spring High School, was recognized for her leadership, volunteer work, school spirit and scholarship.

Among many other volunteer activities, Robison helps staff a crisis hot line for teen-agers and serves as a trainer for the Natural Helper program.

The other recipients and their schools are: Mark Billis, Roanoke Valley Christian Schools; Nanda Channaiah, William Byrd; Tania Conner, James River High; Amy Dudley, Lord Botetourt High; Kristi Hodge, Glenvar High; Amber Hodges, Salem High; and Debra Kurshan, Patrick Henry High.
