Kevin Pacheco, 22, of Roanoke was charged with the electronic equivalent of breaking and entering the Colorado-based Community News Service, according to a federal indictment unsealed in U.S. District Court in Roanoke.
Last June, Pacheco allegedly tapped into the Colorado computer network, which serves about 2,000 customers. The network's president, Klaus Dimmler, said the hacker left taunting messages for customers and stole credit card account numbers.
``He got control of the system, and he actually locked us out,'' Dimmler said last fall.
Pacheco also was charged with the use of stolen credit card numbers to purchase a $4,100 IBM Notebook Computer and to run up more than $1,800 in charges on the CompuServe on-line computer service.
