SULLIVAN, FRY SHARE 3RD IN RICHMOND

Chip Sullivan of Hanging Rock Golf Club and Mark Fry of Roanoke Country Club tied for third in the Middle Atlantic PGA Southern Chapter Assistants' Championship in Richmond.

Jon Corliss of Hell's Point Golf Club won the event with a two-round total of 142 at Hermitage Country Club. Rob McNamara of Farmington Country Club was one stroke back, followed by Sullivan and Fry at 146.

Chris Gibson (148) of The Waterfront Golf Club tied for eighth, and Jeff Sprinkel (150) of Blue Hills Golf Club shared 14th place.

Other area golfers and their finishes: David Kuykendall (153), Hanging Rock, tied for 17th; Kelly Crovo (163), Water's Edge Golf Club, tied for 41st; Tom Purnell (164), Botetourt Country Club, tied for 47th; and C. Thomas Patterson (170), Roanoke Country Club, tied for 60th.

In other golf:

Steve Ames, Radford's golf coach, has announced the signing of three players: Jason Barba of Virginia Beach, Josh Hayes of Marion and Mark Fitzgerald of Waynesboro.

Barba, from Princess Anne High School, won the Scott Robertson Memorial Tournament in Roanoke in 1992 and has been named a Rolex honorable mention All-American. Hayes tied for seventh at the 1993 Group AA state championship meet. Fitzgerald, from Stuarts Draft High School, placed sixth in the 1993 Group A state meet and won the 1993 Mid Atlantic Pro Junior Tournament.
