CROWDER'S SHOT LIFTS ALLEGHANY TO VICTORY

Cameron Crowder's three-run homer in the fifth inning gave Alleghany (8-3 overall, 3-2 in the district) the lead for good en route to a 9-3 Blue Ridge District victory over Rockbridge County (6-7, 2-3) on Tuesday in Lexington.

In other baseball:

Mitch Reed pitched a two-hitter and had two hits and two RBI as Giles beat Auburn 10-4 in a Mountain Empire District game in Pearisburg. Reed (5-0) struck out 10.

Teammate Josh Stephens hit a two-run double for the Spartans (8-5, 5-0).

John Lytton hit a three-run homer to lead the Eagles (4-9, 2-4).

Riley Hodges was 3-for-3 with a double, two RBI and two stolen bases, and John Sawyers was 3-for-3 with four RBI as Franklin County (8-3, 6-1) routed Patrick Henry 13-3 in a Roanoke Valley District game called after five innings because of the "slaughter" rule. The Patriots are 2-9, 2-6.

Chris Harrison pitched a five-hitter and struck out seven, and Chris Dudding was 2-for-3 with a grand slam as Salem beat host Northside 10-1 in a Blue Ridge District game.

Chris Carr pitched a one-hitter and struck out a career-high 17 as William Byrd (13-0, 5-0) blanked Lord Botetourt 2-0 in a Blue Ridge District game in Vinton.

Carr also hit a solo home run.

\ BOYS' SOCCER: Kevin Graham set a new school record with eight goals as host Group AAA William Fleming (8-3) whipped Group A Glenvar 14-0 in a non-district game.

The Highlanders are 0-9.

John Prillaman scored three goals, leading North Cross (9-1-3, 3-0) to a 5-2 Virginia Independent Conference victory over Hargrave Military in Chatham.

Greg Hale scored two goals as Virginia High School beat George Wythe 3-1 in a Hogoheegee District game in Wytheville.

In Christiansburg, Chris LiSanti scored three goals and added two assists as the Blue Demons (8-3) whipped Marion 8-0 in a non-district game.

\ GIRLS' SOCCER: Amanda Bounds scored two goals and Holly Spraker added one as Patrick Henry stayed undefeated, beating host Salem 3-0 in a non-district game.

Katherine Kelly scored two minutes into the second half, giving host North Cross (7-5-1, 4-0) a 1-0 Blue Ridge Conference victory over Roanoke Catholic (3-5-2, 1-2).

\ SOFTBALL: Rhonda Rankin pitched a two-hitter and struck out 11 as host Salem (10-3, 3-1) beat Northside 7-0 in a Blue Ridge District game.

The Vikings are 8-4 and 1-3.

In Rocky Mount, Wanda Toney went 2-for-2 with a home run, 2 RBI and a stolen base to lead Franklin County to a 12-3 rout of Patrick Henry in a Roanoke Valley District game shortened to 4 1/2 innings because of rain.

In Lynchburg, Michelle Miller was 2-for-3 with four RBI as Holy Cross (7-1) blanked North Cross 10-0 in a game that did not count in the Blue Ridge Conference standings. The Raiders (8-4) were held to four hits.

In Low Moor, Erin Dale was 2-for-4 with three RBI as Alleghany beat Rockbridge County 18-3 in a Blue Ridge District game.
