Michael Bryan Johnson, who is also wanted on a robbery charge in New York City, remained in Roanoke City Jail Tuesday night without bond.
At about 3:30 p.m., a man identified as Johnson allegedly assaulted the owner and clerk of the store at 601 Marshall Ave., S.W. He forced them both to the floor, then hit the clerk, Sheryl Hall, 50, with a club. Hall suffered head injuries and was treated at Roanoke Memorial Hospital, police said.
The man took a wallet from the store owner, Lewis J. Sink, 70. He then grabbed a .38-caliber handgun that was kept near the cash register, pointed it at Sink and pulled the trigger three times. The gun misfired. The man then took some cash from the register.
As the man was fleeing, Sink took another small-caliber handgun that he had and fired it at the suspect. Police said the suspect was grazed by what they believe was a bullet from the gun. The suspect denied treatment for the wound and told police it was not caused by a gunshot.
A witness followed the man to a home on the 400 block of Day Avenue Southwest and called police. A man identified as Johnson answered the door and was arrested by police.
Johnson was also charged with assaulting a sheriff's deputy at the city jail and use of a firearm in commission of a felony.
