VA. SOCIAL SERVICES CHIEF QUITS

Larry D. Jackson, commissioner of the state Department of Social Services since 1987, announced his resignation Tuesday.

Jackson said he will continue to oversee the state's welfare programs for up to 90 days to ensure a smooth transition after a successor is named.

Jackson was en route to California for a meeting and was unavailable for comment.
