United Parcel Services, Atlanta-based delivery service operating a sorting hub in Roanoke, said Tuesday it is opening business development offices in three gateway cities in China: Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou.
The expansion is part of the company's strategy to boost its presence in China and the Pacific rim region. The move follows the opening of UPS service to Vietnam on April 1 and the addition of a direct UPS flight between the United States and Taiwan in March.

Auction to sell 64 properties
What is being billed as Western Virginia's largest real estate auction is scheduled for 10 a.m. May 19 at the Roanoke Airport Marriott hotel.
It will be conducted by the auction division of Hall Associates Inc., a Roanoke commercial real estate firm.
The auction will cover 64 properties, 27 of them listed as commercial tracts. Many of the homes are properties foreclosed by banks, most of them in Southeast Roanoke. Residential properties will be sold in the morning, and commercial properties in the afternoon.

Charter Federal Savings Bank, Bristol-based thrift with offices in the Roanoke Valley, said Tuesday its common stock will be included on the List of Marginable OTS Stocks maintained by the Federal Reserve System on Monday. Inclusion on the list means that securities brokers and dealers will be able to make margin loans using Charter Federal's common stock as collateral.
The Smithfield Cos. Inc., Portsmouth parent of Bunker Hill Foods in Bedford, said it has completed purchase of the Hilton and Harris Soup business of Borden Inc. The business consists of four seafood soups, stews and chowders with about $1.7 million in annual sales. Production of the soups will move to Smithfield's Bedford plant.
