DIRECTORY FOR SALEM, SURROUNDING AREAS TO DEBUT BY SEPTEMBER

A combination telephone and community directory - designed for Salem, western Roanoke County and parts of Montgomery County - is expected to be ready by September.

"The Salem Phone Directory" will carry telephone listings and community data for Salem and the Glenvar area, part of Catawba, Shawsville and Elliston.

It will not be a part of the Bell Atlantic company; it will be a product of Community Publishing of Salem, a company established by Roger Bryant and Lee Thelen. Bryant and Thelen also operate a similar firm in Franklin County, and for the last two years they have published a phone directory for the Rocky Mount and Smith Mountain Lake areas.

Bryant said the directory will be supported by area companies' advertising. It will be distributed free to telephone subscribers.

Bryant said the directory will list telephone numbers and points of interest in the area along with restaurants and shops, local school sports information and other community data.

Bryant, a native of Roanoke County, worked for about 15 years in sales and marketing for other companies. Thelen, a native of South Carolina, was in sales and marketing with Southern Bell for about 20 years.

They became partners in community publishing about two years ago.

The company, a member of the Salem-Roanoke County Chamber of Commerce, has offices at 111 E. Main St., in Salem. Its telephone number is (703) 387-3655.
