RELIGION BRIEFS

SALEM PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH has chosen the Rev. Myron T. "Dean" Lindsey as its next pastor. Now pastor of St. Stephens Presbyterian Church in Houston, Texas, he is 33. His wife, Peggy, also is an ordained minister, and the couple has three children. Lindsey will begin his work at the downtown Salem congregation on July 11.

He succeeds the Rev. Wilfred Webb who left in 1992. Since then the church has been served by an interim, the Rev. Leighton Culler.

\ HOMECOMING, marking the 98th year of Shiloh Baptist Church, 40 E. Burwell St. in Salem, is scheduled for May 22.

Events will begin at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Michael Bratton and the Spirits of Joy singers from First Baptist Church in Pearisburg leading the worship. Homecoming dinner will follow in the fellowship hall.

\ THE REV. NELSON HARRIS, pastor of Ridgewood Baptist Church, has been elected president of the Roanoke Valley Ministers Conference, an interfaith group of religion professionals who meet monthly from September through May. He and other officers were installed at the Camp Bethel Conference Center. The other officers are: George Hill and the Rev. David Henderson, vice presidents; the Rev. Philip Motley, treasurer; and the Revs. Michael Nevlin, Gene Edmunds and Carl Savage, secretaries for correspondence, minutes and yearbook editing.

\ DEDICATION OF A PIPE ORGAN, recently given anonymously to St. Paul's Episcopal Church in downtown Salem, is scheduled May 15 with worship at 10 a.m. That afternoon at 4, Thomas Baugh, organist and choir director at Christ Episcopal Church in Roanoke, will present a recital on the organ. A reception will follow.

\ THE REV. EVERETT KIER JR. has joined the staff of Salem Baptist Church as minister of youth and outreach. He is a former pastor of Grace Church, an independent evangelical Christian congregation in Southwest Roanoke but has been attending Salem Baptist for the past year.

\ THE REV. ROLEN C. BAILEY, a former director of ministries for Southern Baptist congregations in the Roanoke Valley Association, and his wife, Frances, are moving to Richmond. Bailey, 66, served in the executive director's position from 1974 to his retirement in 1989. From 1960 to 1974 he was pastor of Cave Spring Baptist Church. The congregation there honored him Sunday and conferred on him the title of pastor emeritus. Since his retirement, Bailey has served Cave Spring and Riverdale churches as interim pastor.

\ THE REV. T. EUGENE CARTER, who will retire in June as superintendent of the Roanoke District of the United Methodist Church, will be honored May 22 at a reception from 3 to 4 p.m. at First United Methodist in downtown Salem. Carter, who will remain in the Roanoke area, is completing 40 years in the ordained ministry with the last five in the administrative job in Roanoke.

\ A CHRISTIAN SCIENCE LECTURE, "A Christian Response to Family Issues," will be presented tonight at 8 at First Church of Christ, Scientist, 1155 Overland Road S.W. Robert L.T. Holcomb of Concord, Mass., is presenting the lecture, which coincides with the National Day of Prayer. The program is free.

\ THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF D-DAY, the successful invasion of France which helped end World War II, will be marked June 5 with a ceremony in Lee Plaza in Roanoke starting at 2 p.m.

A service commemorating those who served and died in the initial landings will be held at nearby Greene Memorial United Methodist Church after the observance.

On June 6, at noon, many churches are expected to ring their bells to mark the actual invasion day. Some also will honor World War II veterans on June 5.

\ CHOIRS from Our Lady of Nazareth, Our Lady of Perpetual Help and St. Gerard's Catholic parishes will join for Musicfest Friday at 7:30 p.m. The program will be held at Nazareth church, 2500 Electric Road S.W.

\ THE REV. DENISE ROTIVAL HUFFMAN, a Hollins College graduate and United Methodist minister, has developed "The Story of the Spirit," a workshop designed individually for church and service groups to enhance relationship to God.

\ ROBIN MARTIN HENRICKSON, Christian education director at College Lutheran Church in Salem for the past six years, will become associate pastor of Christ Lutheran Church on June 1. She will succeed the Rev. Linda Mitchell, who left in October for a chaplaincy post in Columbia, S.C.

Henrickson, who will be ordained to the new position later, is the wife of the Rev. Paul Henrickson, chaplain of Roanoke College. She is a graduate of Wittenberg University and the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Gettysburg, Pa. A resident of Salem for 12 years, she has been active, especially in youth leadership, on the Virginia Synod level.

\ COMMON GROUND, a praise song interdenominational group, has scheduled its final seasonal meeting May 13 at 7:30 p.m. at Grace Covenant Church, 1857 Grandin Road S.W.
