A working mother of two teens, Kara and Karim, Thompson is a daughter of Violet J. Robertson and the late Jeremiah W. Robertson. A graduate of William Fleming High School and Radford University, Thompson has been active in sororities, sings in the church choir and has taught in and been superintendent of the Sunday school. Two years ago she was named Woman of the Year at First Baptist.
THE REV. ROLEN C. BAILEY, a former director of ministries for Southern Baptist congregations in the Roanoke Valley Association, and his wife, Frances, are moving to Richmond. Bailey, 66, served in the executive director's position from 1974 to his retirement in 1989. From 1960 to 1974 he was pastor of Cave Spring Baptist Church. The congregation there honored him Sunday and conferred on him the title of pastor emeritus.
THE REV. T. EUGENE CARTER, who will retire in June as superintendent of the Roanoke District of the United Methodist Church, will be honored May 22 at a reception from 3 to 4 p.m. at First United Methodist in downtown Salem. Carter, who will remain in the Roanoke area, is completing 40 years in the ordained ministry with the last five in the administrative job in Roanoke.
A CHRISTIAN SCIENCE LECTURE, ``A Christian Response to Family Issues,'' will be presented tonight at 8 at First Church of Christ, Scientist, 1155 Overland Road S.W. Robert L.T. Holcomb of Concord, Mass., is presenting the lecture, which coincides with the National Day of Prayer. The program is free.
THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF D-DAY, the successful invasion of France which helped end World War II, will be marked June 5 with a ceremony in Lee Plaza in Roanoke starting at 2 p.m.
A service commemorating those who served and died in the initial landings will be held at nearby Greene Memorial United Methodist Church after the observance.
On June 6, at noon, many churches are expected to ring their bells to mark the actual invasion day. Some also will honor World War II veterans on June 5.
CHOIRS from Our Lady of Nazareth, Our Lady of Perpetual Help and St. Gerard's Catholic parishes will join for Musicfest Friday at 7:30 p.m. The program will be held at Nazareth church, 2500 Electric Road S.W.
THE REV. DENISE ROTIVAL HUFFMAN, a Hollins College graduate and United Methodist minister, has developed ``The Story of the Spirit,'' a workshop designed individually for church and service groups to enhance relationship to God.

A ``TRUE LOVE WAITS'' RALLY, a Southern Baptist effort to encourage premarital sexual abstinence in its youth, is scheduled May 13 at 7:30 p.m. at Bonsack Baptist Church. Several congregations in the Roanoke Valley Association have been promoting the national program at which teens pledge publicly to avoid casual sex.
FRANCES PATTERSON CHUBB will be honored Sunday at 11 a.m. as Mother of the Year for St. Paul United Methodist Church. Guest speaker for the program will be Shirley Whitlock Gunn.
REVIVAL SERVICES will be in progress May 16-18 at Loudon Avenue Christian Church (Disciples of Christ.) The Rev. A. Lincoln James, pastor of Trinity Baptist Church in Richmond, will preach each night at 7:30.
FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH in Cloverdale has scheduled a music program featuring Committed, a gospel group, on May 14 at 6 p.m. The program is sponsored by the CBC Ensemble, which was formed six months ago under the direction of Terrance Drew. Committed is from Emmanuel Tabernacle Baptist Church of the Apostolic Faith in Roanoke.
