THE PEOPLE COLUMN

Drug charges filed against Courtney Love the week Kurt Cobain killed himself were dismissed Wednesday. Investigators said substances found in Love's hotel room were not illegal and that the syringes were used to inject prescription drugs.

Her lawyer said the widow Cobain was not taken to a hospital for overdosing the day of her arrest, as reported, but because of an allergic reaction to prescription drugs.

Princess Stephanie, 29, gave birth to 6\ -pound Pauline in Monaco on Wednesday. It's her second child by ex-royal bodyguard Daniel Ducruet. Louis is 1 1/2.

The two often announce plans to marry but never set a date.

Mike Tyson sounded downright literary on Larry King's show Wednesday, noting that he'd used the first two years of his six-year prison term boning up on Homer, George Bernard Shaw ("he, believe it or not, was very friendly with Gene Tunney") and Tennessee Williams.

The ex-champ paraphrased Williams, noting that "we must mistrust each other because that's the only way we can protect each other from betrayal. I'm a great believer in that."

The White Trash Debutantes, a San Francisco-based punk rock band that includes a 78-year-old grandmother and three male cross-dressers, said it is negotiating with Tonya Harding's lawyer to have her join the band.
