GLENVAR'S NERVO SETS ANOTHER RECORD

Long-distance star Trish Nervo elected to compete in the 800 meters "just for fun" Thursday and wound up setting another Glenvar High School record.

Nervo, who already held school records for the mile and 2-mile runs, toured the 800 meters in two minutes, twenty-eight seconds to shave 6 seconds off the old Glenvar mark of 2:34, set by Jill Strelka in 1990.

Nervo, who also captured the 2-mile Thursday in a tuneup for next week's district meet, led the Glenvar girls to victory in a four-way meet. Glenvar finished with 81 points, compared to 57 for Craig County. Highland (47) and Parry McCluer (16) followed.

Cathy Welford also starred for Glenvar, breaking her old school record in the discus with a heave of 91 feet, 2 1/2 inches.

In a boys' meet among the four Pioneer District schools, senior David Robinson went 6-7 in the high jump to break another Glenvar school record. Senior Ben Mahala also got in on the record-breaking act, winning the 300 at 41.9.

Robinson, Mahala and freshman Troy Lewis were each double-winners for Glenvar, which amassed 140 points to easily down Parry McCluer (53), Craig County (13) and Highland (12.)

In other high school sports Thursday:

\ BOYS' TRACK AND FIELD: At Salem, Jeff Linton won the 110 hurdles and 300 hurdles to lead Rockbridge to victory in a four-way meet. Rockbridge, which had 75 points, held off Salem and Floyd County, which each had 62 points, and William Byrd (33).

\ GIRLS' TRACK AND FIELD: Host Salem scored 80 points to down Floyd County (69), William Byrd (45) and Rockbridge (35) in a four-way meet. Rockbridge's Jennifer Vest (triple jump, 800 run and 300 hurdles) and William Byrd's Christine Grecus (long jump, high jump and 800 run) each were triple-winners.

\ BASEBALL: Jason Anderson threw a four-hitter, struck out 12 and knocked in two runs as Glenvar downed Covington 6-1 to remain undefeated in the Pioneer District. Eric East and Joey Hutton each had three hits for the Highlanders (9-2-1, 6-0). Covington is 8-3-1 and 6-1.

Bobby Melton twirled a three-hitter to best David Lambert in a pitching duel as host Galax nipped Bland 2-1 in a Mountain Empire District game. Melton permitted only three hits and struck out 11 for the Maroon Tide (4-10, 2-4). Lambert was the tough-luck loser, yielding only four hits and striking out five for the Rockets (3-7, 1-4).

At Wytheville, Jeff Monk pitched a one-hitter and Denny Wegman's bases-loaded double in the seventh broke open a scoreless game, lifting unbeaten Castlewood to a 3-0 win over George Wythe in the Hogoheegee District. Tony Callahan's double in the first was the only hit for GW (6-8, 3-7). Castlewood is 11-0 overall and 7-0 district.

At Martinsville, Chris Frith's two-run homer was the key blow in the Bulldogs' 7-2 win over Chatham in the Piedmont District.

\ BOYS' SOCCER: At Lexinbton, Owen Woodward and Andrew Bailey each scored two goals as Salem beat Rockbridge 6-3 in a Blue Ridge District match. Martin Mayerchak had two goals for the Wildcats.

\ GIRLS' SOCCER: Amy Lucci had one goal and one assist and Andrea Jones and Heather Moore each scored as Salem (2-1-5) beat visiting Magna Vista 3-1 in a non-conference match. The Warriors are 0-7.
