BEASLEY'S ALL-AROUND EFFORT LEADS DEMONS

Andra Beasley won four events and had a hand in host Christiansburg's winning 400-meter relay team, leading the Blue Demons to victory in the Dandelion Relays on Thursday.

Beasley won the 100 and 200 runs, the triple jump and the shot put as Christiansburg amassed 106 points. Radford was second with 59 points, followed by Giles (52) and Marion (14 1/2).

In the girls' meet, Maureen Jackson won the shot and discus to lead the Blue Demons to victory. Christiansburg finished with 85 1/2 points. Radford was second with 66 1/2, followed by Giles (44 1/2) and Marion (35 1/2).

In other high school sports Thursday:

\ BOYS' TRACK AND FIELD: At Salem, Rockbridge County scored 75 points to hold off Salem and Floyd County, which each had 62 points, and William Byrd (33) in a four-way meet. Jeff Linton of Salem was the only double winner (110 hurdles and 300 hurdles).

\ GIRLS' TRACK AND FIELD: Host Salem scored 80 points to down Floyd County (69), William Byrd (45) and Rockbridge (35) in a four-way meet. Rockbridge's Jennifer Vest (triple jump, 800 run and 300 hurdles) and William Byrd's Christine Grecus (long jump, high jump and 800 run) each were triple-winners.

At Cave Spring, Heritage won a three-way girls' meet with 77 points, beating Cave Spring's 69 and Pulaski County's 15. Emily Rakes was a double-winner for Cave Spring, taking the high jump and discus.

At Blacksburg, Carroll County's Traci Matney won three events, but Blacksburg won the meet 88 1/2-41 1/2. Matney won the discus, the long jump and the triple jump, was third in the 200 and was on the winning 400 relay team.

\ BOYS' SOCCER: Goalkeeper Brian Hurt recorded a shutout and three players scored a goal apiece as Franklin County whipped William Fleming 3-0 in a Roanoke Valley District match in Rocky Mount. Rico Batista, Bradley Lang and Seth Gallimore scored for the Eagles (6-2-4, 3-0-3). The Colonels (8-4, 2-4) mustered nine shots on goal, but couldn't score on Hurt.

Michael Broughman had three goals and one assist as James River defeated Staunton River 5-4 in a non-district match at Buchanan.

\ BASEBALL: Bobby Melton twirled a three-hitter to best David Lambert in a pitching duel as host Galax (4-10 overall, 2-4 district) nipped Bland 2-1 in a Mountain Empire District game. Melton permitted only three hits and struck out 11. Lambert was the tough-luck loser, yielding only four hits and striking out five for the Rockets (3-7, 1-4).

Russell Smith's two-run single in the seventh lifted Liberty (5-8) to an 8-6 win over Nelson County (6-5) in the Seminole District.

Tommy Huffman pitched a four-hitter and struck out nine as Northside routed Christiansburg 12-1 in a non-district game at Christiansburg.

At Blacksburg, Josh Stephens tossed a four-hitter as Giles beat Blacksburg 10-1 in a non-district game. Mitch Reed and Patrick Steele each had two hits for the Spartans (9-5). The Indians are 3-10.

\ SOFTBALL: Nikki Potter hit a solo homer to help power visiting Franklin County to a 3-1 victory over Cave Spring in the Roanoke Valley District.

At Bedford, Heather Dooley went 2-for-4 and knocked in three runs to lead Liberty to a 12-4 romp over winless Nelson County in the Seminole District.

At Moneta, Sherry Simmons and April Mullins each had two hits, pacing Staunton River to a 9-6 win over Appomattox in the Seminole District.
