GLENVAR'S NERVO SETS ANOTHER RECORD

Long-distance star Trish Nervo elected to compete in the 800 meters "just for fun" Thursday and wound up setting another Glenvar High School record.

Nervo, who already held school records for the mile and two-mile runs, ran the 800 meters in 2 minutes, 28 seconds to shave six seconds off the old mark of 2:34, set by Jill Strelka in 1990.

Nervo, who also won the two-mile, led the host Glenvar girls to victory in a four-way meet. Glenvar finished with 81 points, followed by Craig County (57), Highland (47) and Parry McCluer (16).

In the boys' meet, senior David Robinson cleared 6 feet, 7 inches in the high jump to set another Glenvar school record. Senior Ben Mahala also got in on the record-breaking act, winning the 300 in 41.9.

Robinson, Mahala and freshman Troy Lewis were each double-winners for Glenvar, which amassed 140 points to easily defeat Parry McCluer (53), Craig County (13) and Highland (12).

In Salem, Rockbridge County scored 75 points to hold off Salem and Floyd County, each with 62 points, and William Byrd (33) in a four-way meet. Jeff Linton won two events for Salem.

In the girls' meet, Salem scored 80 points to down Floyd County (69), William Byrd (45) and Rockbridge County (35) in a four-way girls' meet. Rockbridge's Jennifer Vest and William Byrd's Christine Grecus each won three events.

At Cave Spring, Heritage won a three-way girls' meet with 77 points, beating Cave Spring's 69 and Pulaski County's 15. Cave Spring's Emily Rakes was a double-winner, taking the high jump and discus.
