Labonte, driving a Pontiac, toured the 1.058-mile track at 124.871 mph, fastest of the 46 cars that attempted qualifying before rain stopped the session shortly before 6 p.m.
Twenty-two cars remain to take laps when the session resumes this morning. Forty-four cars will start the race.
"I don't know if my time will hold up or not," Labonte, a Winston Cup regular, said. "The conditions will be different [this] morning, and you never know if the track will be faster or slower. But at least I won't get bumped out of the race."
David Green was second-fastest in the abbreviated session, driving a Chevrolet owned by Labonte.
Ernie Irvan, driving a Ford, and Dale Earnhardt, in a Chevrolet, were third and fourth, respectively. Irvan and Earnhardt are 1-2 in the Winston Cup points standings and are taking advantage of an off-week on the senior circuit to compete in the Grand National series.
Rounding out the top 10 qualifiers were Rodney Combs, Randy LaJoie, Jason Keller, Joe Nemechek, Jeff Neal and Terry Labonte.
