UNBEATEN BYRD TRIMS ALLEGHANY

In a Blue Ridge District baseball game that featured six home runs, the winning run was scored without the batter hitting the ball. As a matter of fact, the ball hit him.

Nolan Caldwell hit pinch-hitter Evan Maxey with a pitch to force in the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning as William Byrd edged Alleghany 7-6 in Vinton.

After the leadoff batter for the Terriers (14-0 overall, 6-0 in the district) struck out, Chris Carr singled and C.D. Polumbo walked. An infield error on a ball hit by Mike McGuire loaded the bases and set the stage for Maxey.

Carr (8-0) picked up the victory with one-third of an inning of relief pitching and hit a solo homer for Byrd. Shannon Gray and Polumbo also had solo homers for the Terriers and Ryan Caya hit a two-run shot.

Cameron Crowder hit a two-run blast and David Dixon added a solo shot for Alleghany (8-4, 3-3).
