FOOTBALL PLAYOFF?

The NCAA said Friday is it considering five options for a possible Division I-A football playoff.

A committee spent two days studying a special report on the state of college football that included the playoff options, the NCAA said in a news release.

The committee will meet again June 2-3 and decide later whether to recommend a Division I-A football playoff.

The five playoff options are:

A two-team, one-game national championship with the teams determined after the Jan. 1 bowl games.

A four-team, three-game tournament, with the teams selected after the Jan. 1 bowl games.

An eight-team, seven-game tournament, with the teams playing in four quarterfinal games on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day. The bracket would include automatic and at-large berths.

A 12-team, 11-game tournament, with four teams receiving first-round byes and the others matched in first-round games on the first Saturday in December. Quarterfinal games would be played New Year's Eve and New Year's Day.

A 16-team, 15-game tournament, with eight first-round games played on the first Saturday in December. Winners would advance to quarterfinal games on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day.
