W&L PLAYER IN NCAA TENNIS FIELD

Washington and Lee senior Robby MacNaughton has earned one of 32 at-large bids to the NCAA Division III men's tennis championship May 20-23 in Redlands, Calif.

MacNaughton compiled a 14-9 record in singles this season and is ranked 15th in the nation. In doubles, he and his partner, Peter Hammond, were selected alternates for the championship with a 13-9 record.

Despite winning their 10th straight Old Dominion Athletic Conference championship, the Generals were not selected to the 12-team NCAA field. They finished the season 8-9 with five of their nine losses coming to teams ranked in the top 10 of Division III.

Washington and Lee is host to VMI in the seventh annual Lee-Jackson Lacrosse Classic today at 2 p.m. at Wilson Field in Lexington.

The Generals, who have won the past meetings in the series, enter the game with an 8-5 record and are ranked 13th in Division III. VMI (6-6) has lost its past three games, two of them to ACC powers Virginia and North Carolina.

Bowie State basketball coach Tyrone Hart will assume the same position at Virginia State. Hart, who was 31-76 in four years at Bowie State, succeeds Harold Deane Sr., who retired in March after 17 seasons.

Bowie State was 8-18 in Hart's final season. One of the Tigers' victories was a one-point win over Virginia State.

Hart was co-captain at Howard for two seasons and a starting guard for the Bison from 1972-1976.
