ELECTRIC CAR SPARKS STUDENTS TO 2ND

Roanoke County students finished second in two categories in the electric vehicle grand prix last weekend at Richmond International Raceway. They also won the sportsmanship award.

The Roanoke County car finished in a three-way tie for second in the acceleration and handling category. The students at Glenvar High School and Arnold Burton Technology Center also placed second in the oral presentation about their car.

The overall winner of the 16 entrants was Northampton County High School-East from Jackson, N.C., which traveled 64 miles in the range event and averaged 60 mph for 15 miles in the speed event.

In the 20-lap speed event, the Roanoke County car dropped out after eight laps when its batteries died. The car traveled about 20 miles in the range competition before losing power.
