RADFORD DIPLOMA TO COST MORE

Radford University students - like others across the state - will pay more to attend college this fall.

The school's board of visitors voted unanimously Friday to raise in-state tuition for both undergraduate and graduate programs by 3 percent.

Out-of-state undergraduate students will pay an additional 6.8 percent for tuition. The increase for non-Virginians in graduate programs will be 6.7 percent.

Room and board rates for undergraduate students were increased 2.5 percent.

The higher rates mean Radford students from Virginia will pay $216 more as undergraduates and $120 more as graduates.

Under the new rates, tuition and fees for undergraduate in-state residential students will be $7,250.

Out-of-state students will pay $584 more as undergraduates and $404 more as graduates.

The 3 percent tuition increase is the maximum allowed by the General Assembly. However, Radford President Donald Dedmon said the increase was the minimum the school could afford.

Virginia Tech's board of visitors recently approved a 3 percent tuition increase for the fall.

Dedmon said he could offer parents of current or prospective college students "very little financial comfort."

"I have always contended that a college education is worth the cost ... but I also feel strongly that the commonwealth must do everything possible to restore institutions to funding levels where we can hold the line on tuition costs," he said.

Dedmon also said he was concerned that higher costs may discourage out-of-state students, who will pay $11,378 to live on campus as undergraduates.

Student activity fees were raised from $34 to $38 per semester, and an annual "computer fee" of $28 for all students was instituted by the board.

School administrators said the fee will improve the campus' computer network by upgrading equipment and increasing the number of terminals available to students.
