BLACKSBURG RUNNER SETS RACE RECORD

Travis Walter of Blacksburg smashed the course record by 35 seconds and finished more than 1 1/2 minutes ahead of the field in winning the 13th annual Virginia Western 5,000 Meter Run on Saturday.

Walter completed the 3.1-mile course in 14:51.35 to finish ahead of nearest pursuers Ken Monger (16:26.34) and Charles McKinney (17:09.68), both of Roanoke.

Leslie Beauregard of Blacksburg claimed the women's title with a winning time of 19:58.74, followed by Salem's Laura Southwick (20:17.83) and Roanoke's Deborah Mayhew (21:45.72).

In the Master's Division for runners age 40 and older, Robert Belcher (18:58.40) won the men's title and Betty Segar (23:35) won the women's. Witold South, a team of area runners, won the team competition.
