RED-HOT CUNDIFF GETS WIN

When Rodney Cundiff emerged from this Thunderbird late Saturday, the steam was rising from his skin.

Even though Cundiff was especially happy and the air temperature was in the 60-degree range, Cundiff was hot. Red hot.

Cundiff won the 100-lap Late Model Stock Car feature of the Baker Brothers 300 at Franklin County Speedway, besting an 18-car field that included several New River Valley Speedway regulars. NRVS canceled its scheduled race during the afternoon because of rain.

The win was Cundiff's third consecutive at FCS, and it vaulted him into the top five in points. Of the past 300 laps, Cundiff has led 299. In four races this year, Cundiff has three wins and a fifth-place finish.

"If I keep winning here, I'm not going to race anywhere else," Cundiff said.

Cundiff missed the first two races at FCS this season.

"I didn't run off and hide tonight," Cundiff said. "Kenny Wagner ran real strong."

Wagner started on the pole but one lap later conceded the lead to Cundiff, who started on the outside.

Wagner pressed Cundiff for 99 laps, through 10 cautions, and placed second. It was his fifth top-five finish this year. Wagner is second in points and trails leader Dudley Lawhorn by six.

Ronnie Newman placed third, one spot ahead of Lawhorn. Dicky Wilson and Rick Sigmon, two former FCS winners making their first appearance this season, finished fifth and sixth.

Nine drivers were involved in the series of cautions periods. The most serious mishap was a three-car collision on lap 60 involving Randy Arrington, Tink Reedy and Sigmon. Only Reedy was unable to continue.

In other races Saturday night:

Mini Stock points leader Steve Lam won his fourth race of the season, overtaking pole-sitter Tommy Dean on the opening lap.

Dean, who blew an engine in his 1994 FCS debut last week, placed second, and Gary Joyce was third.

Mike Dudley continued his domination in the Street Stock class, escaping a $200 bounty put up by the track. Lonnie Foley finished second, one spot ahead of Mike Elkins.

Mike Owens, 1992 Pure Stock track champion, picked up his second win this year and moved to two points behind Red Hartman, the division points leader.

Leon Moles of Willis was second. Hartman, who started at the rear of the 15-car field because he was last week's winner, rallied to place third.

The Rookie and Any Car races, each scheduled for 25 laps, were rained out.
