VOTING

New River Valley residents who want to vote in the next election must register first. If you were registered in your community but haven't voted for four years, you should register again.

To register, you must be a U.S. citizen, live in Virginia and turn 18 by the next general election.

Registrar's offices in Montgomery, Pulaski, Giles and Floyd counties and the city of Radford are open Monday through Friday. During designated times before an election, they also must schedule special Saturday hours for registration and absentee balloting.

Prospective voters must have lived in the county or city before registering. They must register at least 29 days before an election to be able to vote in it. This means to vote on Election Day, Nov. 8, you must register by Oct. 11. Here are locations, phone numbers and normal hours:

Montgomery County: Courthouse, Christiansburg; 382-5741; Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m.

Pulaski County: Room 218, Historic Courthouse, 52 W. Main St., Pulaski; 980-2111; Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m.

Giles County: 507 Wenonah Ave. (Old Law Building), Pearisburg; 921-2802; Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.

Floyd County: Courthouse, Floyd; 745-9350; Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.

Radford: 29 1st St. (at the rear of the Recreation Building), 731-3639; Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m.
