MOST OF US ARE PARTIAL TO OUR VERY OWN

From cultural diversity to rural tranquility, the New River Valley offers a variety of neighborhoods.

Valley residents who responded to the Discover survey and the question, "What's your favorite neighborhood?" gave us a varied list that covers the entire area.

If there's any common characteristic to the responses, it's that people like their own neighborhood best.

For example, lifelong area resident Shirley Surface named his home turf, Ellett Valley, as his favorite neighborhood.

"The people seem so nice, and I like the view, living between the mountains," he said.

Ellett Valley received other reader endorsements for the same reasons.

On the opposite end of the residential spectrum, the Hethwood area was named frequently.

Readers favor Hethwood's unique combination of student housing and established residences. They also praised its year-round activities.

Hethwood has "amenities for all ages," said Katy Scott.

Not far away is Stroubles Mill, praised by reader John Rupe for its "beautiful homes with well-landscaped yards."

Folks who live over in the Prices Fork area say it's a tranquil neighborhood occupied by fine people.

Bob Mullins nominated Walton Farms in Christiansburg, saying, "It's one of those quiet little neighborhoods you never hear about."

Historic Newbern - Pulaski County's original seat and the location of a number of old, architecturally unique structures - also drew favorable comment.

Many other New River Valley neighborhoods were cited. Here's a list:

Christiansburg: East Main Street, Belmont Farms, Windmill Hills, Craig Drive, Diamond Point, Spring House Road;

Blacksburg: Bishop Road; Mount Tabor area, Preston Avenue-Draper Road, Gracelyn Street, Oak Manor, Dutch Village, Airport Acres, College Park;
