DEAR READERS: THIS ONE IS YOURS

Dear Current Readers:

Our annual Discover the New River Valley special section features a unique theme for 1994.

About six weeks ago, we published questionnaires in the New River Current that asked you about some of your favorite things about life in the New River Valley. The response was terrific, and we thank you for it: Exactly 100 of the questionnaires were filled out and returned to us.

We've tabulated the responses and prepared the stories that appear in this edition based on your preferences.

It was a big job. But it was fun, too. From your opinions we learned a lot about our own community - and smiled a lot while we did.

Obviously, among our readers are a lot of thoughtful and witty people.

Nancy Dowdy of Blacksburg is one. Her favorite romantic getaway in the New River Valley is "in my mind." Her favorite coach is "any at Lamaze class." Why? "There's something to show for their effort."

Then there was the unsigned questionnaire sent to us from Willis in Floyd County. We don't know who this person is, but we do know they're fond of stock-car racing.

They said the landmark that best represents the New River Valley is the "New River Valley Speedway." Their favorite hike is "up the hill at the race track." Favorite public park or garden is "at the race track - it has a lilac bush." Favorite band? "Whoever is being played on the loudspeakers at the race track." Favorite used-book store? "Don't read books, I go to the race track."

We're also pleased to announce the winners of our grand Discover '94 sweepstakes. Their names were drawn at random from among the questionnaires completed and mailed to us.

Dean Shufflebarger of Pulaski is the winner of a free month's subscription to the Roanoke Times & World-News. Kelly Page Clark of Blacksburg won a fancy umbrella with the newspaper's insignia, and John Rupe of Pulaski won a Virginia Tech Independence Bowl T-shirt.

We received many enlightening and entertaining responses to our questions. The New River Valley has plenty of things people appreciate, some off the beaten path and some just off-beat.

We hope you enjoy reading this section as much as we enjoyed preparing it, and discover some new things about our community in the process.
