The New River Valley has several child day-care centers for all day, part day and before- or after-school care. Some have preschool and summer programs.

BLACKSBURG

Blacksburg Carousel Learning Center, 952 Heather Drive. Licensed for 150. Ages 2 to 13. Open all day, before- and after-school programs. Playschool program, 8:30-11:30 a.m., ages 2-5, can enroll for three or five days.

Established in 1964, it was the first day-care center in Montgomery County.

Accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children and designated as a model child-care center by the Virginia Council on Child Day Care and Early Childhood Programs. New River Community Action Head Start: Ages 3 and 4. Capacity ranges from 16 to 20. Open 9 a.m.-1 p.m., Tuesday through Friday, September to May. No fees; federally funded nonprofit organization. Transportation provided; health and dental services offered; encourages parent involvement. Offers home visitor to work with parent and child at home; serves more than 300 children in the New River Valley.
