TEACHER OF THE WEEK

On any given day you might find Helen Tippie in front of her school computer when the sun goes down, communicating with an E-mail pal or figuring out how to run a new software program. Tippie says she's not one to shy away from computers. ``I love keeping up with modern technology. That keeps teaching alive for me,'' she said.

Tippie says she takes all the classes she can in computers, constantly updating her skills and sharing them with her pupils and fellow teachers at her Fincastle school. ``I want to be able to funnel the information to the kids as quick as I can,'' she said.

``Mrs. Tippie shares her enthusiasm for computers and science with her students,'' said her nominator. Tippie admits to being partial to science; in fact, she had planned on a career in that field when she took a temporary teaching job in Botetourt County. She went into education and says she has never regretted it.

The mother of two children and 2 grandchildren (there's another on the way), Tippie enjoys computers, reading and pulling for Virginia and the Chicago Bulls. She also collects basketball cards.
