WHO, WHEN & WHERE

Bedford booksale|

Friends of the Bedford Public Library will hold their semi-annual booksale on May 14 from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. on the sidewalk of Bedford Middle School.

Friends are asking for donations of books, specifically children's, mysteries, romances, novels, current college texbooks, nonfiction, cookbooks, craft books and how-to books - hardcover or paperback - in good shape. Magazines such as National Geographic and Smithsonian, CDs, video and cassette tapes also will be accepted.

Proceeds will go toward the library's building fund, programming, training and book purchasing. For information, call K. Nuzzo at 586-6319.

Science Museum grant

The Science Museum of Western Virginia has been awarded a $50,000 grant from the Beirne Carter Foundation in Richmond.

``It's a big one,'' said museum executive director Ken Schutz. ``We were real happy.''

The grant is the single largest capital contribution the Roanoke museum has ever received from a private foundation. The money will be used to develop a new physics gallery on the Roanoke museum's fourth floor.

``What's so special about the Beirne Carter grant is that it's the first grant we've received to match state funds,'' Schutz said. The Virginia legislature granted $625,000 to the museum in its budget this year. Those dollars, though, must be matched by local dollars. ``I hope it sets the tone for the rest of our [fund-raising] campaign.''

The Beirne Carter grant comes on the heels of a $100,000 grant to the museum by the National Science Foundation. All the funding will be used to update and renovate the 10-year-old exhibits in the fourth floor galleries. The opening of the new physics gallery is set for early 1995 - coincidentally the museum's 25th anniversary.
