BECKNER, Hubert C. Jr., (``Pee Wee""), 58, of Vinton, passed away Monday, May 9, 1994, after a brave battle with cancer. To most friends and his co-workers, he was ``Pee Wee"". He was ``Sonny"" to his family and some friends, and was ``Papaw"" to his beloved granddaughters He had been employed by Roanoke Ready Mix, Olde Virginia Brick and most recently, with Lowe's of Roanoke. He was retired as Chief Petty Officer from the U.S. Naval Reserve, with 34 years of service. He was an active member of the Vinton Lions Club. He was a charter and active member of Lynn Haven Baptist Church. Mr. Beckner is survived by his devoted wife, Shirley Petitt Beckner. Also surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Renee B. and Duane Rice of Vinton; a son and daughter-in-law, Randy W. and Connie W. Beckner; two granddaughters, Chelsea Renee and Amanda Shea Beckner, all of Kingsport, Tenn.; three sisters, Beverly Meade of Boones Mill, Va., Will Douglas, and Shelby St. Clair of Vinton, Va.; mother-in-law, Bernice Petitt of Roanoke, Va.; nieces, nephews and many wonderful friends. Funeral services will be conducted from the Lynn Haven Baptist Church 3 p.m. Thursday, May 12, 1994. Burial with military honors will be in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. BRANSCOME, Howard, 74, of Dublin, passed away Monday, May 9, 1994. Arrangements by Bower Funeral Chapel, Pulaski.

CAHOON, Vera Coffman, 88, of Fincastle, died Sunday, May 8, 1994. She was a member of the Zion Hill Baptist Church, and was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Cline Cahoon. She is survived by three daughters and two sons-in-law, Lorene and Fred Lucas of Fincastle, Frances Green of Fincastle, Ruth and Charles Edgecumbe of Roanoke; four sons and daughters-in-law, George and Darys Cahoon, Percy and Rosalie Cahoon, Carl and Jennie Cahoon, Frank and Judy Cahoon, all of Fincastle; one sister and brother-in-law, Blanche and Kent Davis of Troutville; two sisters-in-law, Lyda Coffman of Montvale and Cora Coffman of Chesapeake; 12 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 11, 1994, 2 pm, at the Rader Troutville Chape l with the Rev. Mitchell Luckie and the Rev. Robert Sadler officiating. DANCE, William Morgan, (``Bill""), 71, of Salem, died Monday, May 9, 1994. He was an Air Force veteran of World War II, a retired employee of C & P Telephone Co. of Va., a member of a local masonic lodge, and a member of Windsor Hills Baptist Church. Mr. Dance was preceded in death by his half brother, Charles Wood. Surviving are his wife, Faye C. Dance, Salem; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Keith M. Dance, Roanoke, R. Kevin and Kara H. Dance, Vinton; sister and brother-in-law, Lorraine D. and Warren Howard, Amherst. Also surviving are a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at Oakey's South Chapel, 11 a.m. Wednesday, with the Rev. C. Lawrence Dodson officiating. Interment will follow in Fort Hill Cemetery, Lynchburg, Va. at 3 p.m. Wednesday. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Windsor Hills Baptist Church. GOOD, Estelle Cummings Engleman, By the hundreds they came to the classrooms where Estelle Cummings Engleman Good, 77, taught two generations of elementary students until she retired in 1978. Her love for education spread far beyond the schools where she taught, however. She immersed herself as a leader and active participant in the lives of two churches, and during the past year she was president of the Blackstone College for Girls Alumnae Association, which administers an endowed college scholarship fund. Her death on Saturday, May 7, 1994, came after a short illness at a Roanoke hospital. She was born in Lexington, Va., on April 1, 1917, graduated from Effinger High School in 1935 and completed a bachelor's degree in education in 1959 at James Madison University. After teaching full time and part-time in the Rockbridge County Public Schools from 1937 through 1945, she resumed her teaching career in 1951 for the Roanoke City Public Schools, first at Belmont School and then for 23 years at her neighborhood Huff Lane School. She was a member and past president of Phi Sigma Alpha International, a life member of the Virginia Retired Teachers Association and life member of the Parent-Teacher Association. Her love for Grace United Methodist Church began in 1951 as a charter member, and grew as she helped lead the church to a membership of more than 600 during the 1970's. She held many offices in the church, including the administrative board, the council on ministries, nominating committee, parsonage committee, pastor-parish relations committee, and most recently as church historian. For several years she was elected a delegate to the Virginia United Methodist Annual Conference, and was president of the Grace Church United Methodist Women. Music was an important part of her life, and she loved singing in the Grace Church choir and with the Heritage Singers at the First Baptist Church of Roanoke. She married Ralph M. Good, Sr., in 1981, and for 14 years they were companions on numerous trips throughout the United States, Canada and The Bahamas with the XYZ's at First Baptist. She is survived by her husband, Ralph; by her two sons, Thomas E. Engleman of Yardley, Pa., and David V. Engleman of Marietta, Ga.; by his three sons, James W. Good of Raleigh, N.C., Andrew S. Good of Vinton and Ralph M. Good Jr., of Roanoke; and by their wives, Tozia Engleman, Patsy Engleman, Janice Good, Ann Good and Lillian Good. There are 13 grandchildren, Heather Romig Evers, Joel Romig, Megan Engleman, Claire Engleman, Neal Engleman, Emily Beth Good, James S. Good Jr., Amy Louise Good, Timothy West Good, Cassandra Dee Good Cochran, Ralph M. G ood III, Christy Ann Good, and Andrew David Good. Her three great-grandchildren are Stephanie Beckett, Rachol Cochran, and Alexander Evers. Two sisters, Lucille Snider of Lexington and Harrisonburg, and Emily Deane of Richmond, also survive her. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, May 12, at Grace United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends Tuesday and Wednesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel. HARSHMAN, Robert Kenneth, 72, of 3915 Woodlawn St., Hopewell, died Sunday, May 8, 1994, in John Randolph Hospital. He was born in Dayton, Ohio and was a resident of Hopewell since 1963. Mr. Harshman was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II, a retired sheet-metal mechanic for Kitchen Plumbing and Heating and was presently a security guard for Wackenhut Security Company. He was the son of the late Horace Harry and Della Wright Harshman. Surviving are his wife, Winona Etholine Harshman of Hopewell, his daughter and son-in-law, Donna Mae and Willy Holmes, both of Hopewell, a grandson, Paul Lee Holmes of Hopewell, two sisters, Mary A. Lipscomb of Lodi, Calif. and Dorothy J. Baumbach of St. Petersburg, Fla.; three brothers, Clifton Harry Harshman, Dale Fredrick Harshm an and Don Ralph Harshman, all of Dayton, Ohio. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Hopewell Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. John Crawford, pastor of Wesley United Methodist Church, officiating. Interment with military honors will be in Southlawn Memorial Park, Prince George County.

MATTOX, Hubert Edward, 74, of Vinton, died Monday, May 9, 1994. He was an Army veteran of World War II, a member of First Christian Church, Vinton, and a retired welder from the Norfolk & Western Railway's East End Shops. Surviving are four sisters, Vida Overstreet, Verta Mattox Jannie, both of Vinton, Fredna Board, Roanoke, Bessie Roberts, Vinton; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted from Oakey's Vinton Chapel 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 11, 1994 with the Rev. Holly O. Phillips officiating. Burial will be in Sherwood Memorial Park. MOSES, Hal Lynwood, 59, of Newport, died Sunday, May 8, 1994, at Memorial Sloan-Kette ring Hospital in New York City. Hal was Profesor of Mechanical Engineering at Va. Tech, having joined the faculty in 1969. An alumnus of Va. Tech, he graduated in 1960 with distinction and attended M.I.T. in Boston on a full scholarship. After graduating in 1964 with a Ph.D., he remained as a post-doctoral fellow and teacher before accepting joint positions as adjunct professor at N.C. State and Research Engineer at Corning Glass in Raleigh, N.C. He and his wife, Suzy, came to Va. Tech and Newport in 1969 as newlyweds and celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary this April. Their marriage has been blessed with two fine boys, Brooks, 18 and Shane, 15. Hal's primary focus during these years has been his family and his final prayer was that the boys should share and carry on the values he had tried to live and teach them. His greatest concern as a professor was that his students came away from his classes having acquired a greater sense of the value of life and the contribution they might make. Hal and his family have been active members of the Newport Methodist Church for many years. A memorial service to celeberate his life will be held at the Newport Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church on Route 42 in Newport, Va., on Wednesday, May 11, 2 p.m. The family will receive visitors at the church on Tuesday from 7 to 8 p.m. In honor of his love of the outdoors, burial services will be at the homeplace for the family. In addition to his wife and sons, he is survived by his brother, Russell Moses, and his sister, Ann M. Presnell, both of North Carolina. PAYNE, Mattie Agnes, 86, of Roanoke, passed away Saturday, May 7, 1994. Survivors include one daughter, Barbara Keeling, Roanoke; one son, Ralph Payne, Landover, Md.; three sisters, Maggie Scott, Nellie Penn, Sadie Akers; one brother, Lawrence Buckner, all of Roanoke; four granddaughters, Darlene , Carmela, Letitia, Yuvonnada Keeling, all of Roanoke; four grandsons, Cornelius Keeling, Fairfield, Calif., Kirk Keeling, Seattle, Wash., Steven and Tony Keeling, both of Roanoke; two great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. TAYLOR, Ray, 84, of Sugar Grove, died Monday, May 9, 1994 in the Bristol Regional Medical Center in Bristol, Tennessee. Mr. Taylor, a mechanic, was owner and operator of Taylor's Garage in Sugar Grove, Va. for many years. He is survived by his wife, Edith Reedy Taylor, Sugargrove; one son, Jack Taylor, Sugar Grove; one sister, Lucy Sanders, Roanoke; one brother Louis Taylor, Chesapeake. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 11, 1994 at Seaver-Brown Chapel, with the Rev. Kenny Price officiating. Burial will follow in Slemp Cemetery in Sugar Grove. TERRY, Grace Beatrice, 98, of Roanoke, passed away Monday, May 9, 1994, in a local hospital. She was a native of Bedford and was retired from the Bedford School System, after serving as teacher and principal. After completing high school she continued her education at Morgan State College in Baltimore , Md. and Virginia State College, Petersburg. She had shared her long life with her sister and brother-in-law, Mrs. Elizabeth Clark and the late Herman Clark. In addition to her sister, Mrs. Clark, she is survived by a nephew, Herman R. Clark Jr., North Amityville, Long Island N.Y.; cousin, Mrs. Elizabeth McSadden, Philadelphia, Pa.; a host of other relatives and friends. Arrangements by Hamlar-Curtis Funeral Home.

THURMAN, George, 91, of Buena Vista, died Sunday, May 8, 1994, in Stonewall Jackson Hospital. Born August 5, 1902, in Amherst County, he was the son of the late Ambrose and Pinky Jones Thurman. He is survived by a son, George Albert Thurman Jr., Buena Vista; a special friend, Cornelia Reid Thornton, Buena Vista and her family, a sister, Ora Johnson, Lynchburg; five brothers, Amherst Halsey, Madison Heights; Melvin Thurman, Tom Halsey, Buck Halsey and Moses Halsey; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m., Wednesday, May 11, at Lomax Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Carl Tinsley and the Rev. LeRoy Carter officiating. Interment will follow in Nowlin Cemetery. WARE, Nancy Ward, 72, of Roanoke, died Sunday, May 8, 1994. Funeral services will be conducted at the grave in Sherwood Burial Park, Salem, 1 p.m. Wednesday with the Rev. Gregory L. Adkins, Minister of Raleigh Court United Methodist Church officiating. She was a graduate of Lewis-Gale School of Nursing, class of 1943, and was a retired Registered Nurse. She was a member of the Arlington Presbyterian Church, the Order of the Eastern Star and the Daughters of the Nile. Survivors include her daughter, Mrs. Vickie Brockus Charpentier, Neptune Beach, Fla.; her son, Floyd Ware Jr., Lake City, Fla.; her sister, Claudine Conner; her brother, Edward Conner, both of Roanoke; three grandchildren.
