LORD BOTETOURT TOPS NORTHSIDE

Senior right-hander Billy Arthur struck out 15 and pitched a three-hitter as host Lord Botetourt defeated Northside 6-3 in a Blue Ridge District baseball game Monday.

Arthur went the distance to improve his record to 3-1. Shannon Williams hit a two-run home run in the first inning and Gabe Sander added a two-run homer in the fifth for the Cavaliers (6-5-1, 1-4-1). For the Vikings (8-5, 1-5), John Doss hit a solo homer in the fifth.

In other baseball:

At Brookneal, William Campbell defeated Staunton River 6-3 in a Seminole District game. Jason Morgan was 2-for-3 with two RBI for the Eagles (6-8).

\ SOFTBALL: Lisa Baetz went 3-for-4 with a home run and five RBI, and Blair Calvert went 2-for-4 with five RBI as North Cross (10-4, 7-0) rolled over Carlisle 22-7 in a Blue Ridge Conference game called after five innings.

Heather Dooley went 4-for-4 with two doubles and two triples and had five runs batted in as host Liberty (10-4, 10-4) swamped Brookville 9-6 in a Seminole District game. One of Dooley's triples scored three runs in the fifth inning and snapped a 5-5 tie. The Bees are 7-5 and 7-5.

At Breckinridge Middle School, Cave Spring took advantage of errors by host William Fleming to cruise to a 22-1 Roanoke Valley District victory. Sarah Ogilvie hit an RBI double for Cave Spring (7-5, 2-2). Claire Brewer doubled for William Fleming (1-10, 1-3).

\ BOYS' SOCCER: Lee Updike and Sterling Turner each scored two goals as Salem defeated Alleghany 8-0. Andrew Bailey, Owen Woodward, Ryan McDermott and Ryan Reeves scored the other goals. Brad Moser had two saves in earning the shutout for Salem (9-4).

\ GIRLS' SOCCER: Holly Spraker and Annie Eure scored two goals each, and Margaret Hunter Turner had a goal and two assists as undefeated Patrick Henry mauled host William Byrd 10-0.

\ BOYS' TENNIS: Blacksburg whipped Carroll County 9-0 to advance to the finals of the New River District tournament at Radford University's Dedmon Center. The Indians will face Christiansburg, which beat Radford 6-3, in the team championship starting 9 a.m. Thursday. The individual semifinals begin 4 p.m. today. In the singles, Robert Gibb of Blacksburg will play Chad Collins of Carroll County and Adam Neal of Radford faces Jesse McHose of Christiansburg.

\ GIRLS' TENNIS: At Radford High, Bisset Park and the Dedmon Center, Blacksburg bombed Carroll County 9-0 and Radford swamped Christiansburg 9-0 in the semifinals of the New River District tournament. The winners play 9 a.m. Thursday at the Dedmon Center. In individual competition today, Cathy Richardson of Radford will play Christy Johnson of Carroll County and Emily Gibb of Blacksburg faces Amy Powell of Christiansburg.

\ GIRLS' TRACK: Melissa Baker of James River won the 100-meter hurdles, the 100, and the 300 hurdles, but Bath County won the meet with 78 points followed by James River (53) and Craig County (30).
