SAYERS' 7-HITTER LIFTS WYTHE TO WIN

Eric Sayers pitched a seven-hitter, striking out 10 and walking four as George Wythe beat visiting Northwood 4-1 in Hogoheegee District game. Sayers went 2-for-3 with an RBI and Chris Underwood went 2-for-4 for the Maroons (7-8 overall, 4-7 in the district). Northwood is 4-5 in the district.

At Hot Springs, three sophomores combined to pitch Bath County (8-4 overall, 4-4 in the Pioneer District) to an 11-0 victory over Highland (0-11, 0-10). The pitchers - David Buzzard, Ernie Deel and Matt Altizer - combined on a two-hitter, walking two and striking out nine. Danny Woodzell had two singles and a double and two RBI for Bath County, and Cory Wolfe added a double and a solo home run for two RBI.

\ SOFTBALL: Lisa Baetz went 3-for-4 with a home run and five RBI and Blair Calvert went 2-for-4 with five RBI as North Cross (10-4, 7-0) rolled over Carlisle 22-7 in a Blue Ridge Conference game called after five innings because of the "slaughter" rule. Carlisle is 6-5 and 3-3.

Parry McCluer's Heather Worley's two-run double sparked a big sixth inning as the Fighting Blues came from behind to beat host Bath County 13-9 in a Pioneer District game. The Blues exploited six walks and an error to score 10 runs in their big inning. Jenny Deeds scored two runs and had an RBI for the Chargers.

\ BOYS' SOCCER: Lee Updike and Sterling Turner each scored two goals as Salem defeated Alleghany 8-0. Andrew Bailey, Owen Woodward, Ryan McDermott and Ryan Reeves scored the other goals. Brad Moser had two saves in earning the shutout for Salem (9-4).

Magna Vista's Andrew Tunnell scored both goals, the first unassisted and the second on a feed from Haleem Street, as the Warriors (5-6 overall, 5-2 in the Piedmont District) blanked host Fieldale-Collinsville 2-0. F-C (0-8 in the district) was outshot 36-11.

\ GIRLS TRACK: Melissa Baker of James River won the 100-meter hurdles, the 100, and the 300 hurdles but Bath County won the meet with 78 points followed by James River (53) and Craig County (30).
