RESTORING A LIFELINE

The Memorial Bridge, which links the Fairlawn community to the city of Radford, wasn't considered a lifeline for both communities until it had to be closed for repairs April 21.

Now, both sides of the river are realizing what an important service the old bridge provided. What was once an easy commute has become a hassle. Fairlawn businesses are trying to entice people to make the extra effort to visit their shops, and the Virginia Department of Transportation is being pressed to have the repairs done quickly so that life can return to normal.

On May 2, the transportation department said it would take two weeks to complete the work. Officials said Monday that the bridge could reopen by the middle of the week.
