Food Lion Inc. said Monday that a federal court in Athens, Ga., has refused to allow a class-action race discrimination lawsuit to proceed against the North Carolina-based supermarket chain.
Former Food Lion employee Sarah Bullock filed a lawsuit in 1993 charging that the company failed to promote her and subsequently fired her because she is black. Bullock tried to amend her lawsuit in February to charge that Food Lion had discriminated against all current and former black employees.
Last week, Food Lion said, the federal court found that the race discrimination claims were not appropriate for a class-action lawsuit.

Comair Holdings Inc., Cincinnati parent of the Delta Connection airline Comair, a commuter airline serving Roanoke Regional Airport, on Monday confirmed that airline management negotiators and pilots reached a tentative agreement Thursday on a new contract for the 720-member pilot group. Ratification of the four-year agreement is expected by May 18.
Also, Comair said it expects to buy from time to time, as market conditions dictate, up to 2.15 million shares of its common stock (about10%) in the open market or through privately negotiated transactions. The company has appointed Alex. Brown & Sons Inc. exclusive agent for this share-repurchase program.
The company also said preliminary estimates for the quarter ended March 31 indicate that earnings per share for the quarter will be about 28 cents, compared with 40 cents for the 1993 quarter. Comair stock is traded on the Nasdaq National Market system.
