EAGLES HOLD ON, NIP KNIGHTS

Franklin County scored the go-ahead run on a throwing error in the bottom of the fourth inning, and the Eagles hung on to beat Cave Spring 8-7 in a Roanoke Valley District baseball game played Tuesday in Rocky Mount.

After the Knights tied the score at 7 on Dave Dunston's two-run single in the top of the fourth, Franklin County (10-3 overall, 8-1 in the district) came back in the bottom of the inning with a leadoff single from Isaac Medeiros. Chad Foutz followed with a drag bunt for a single that also resulted in a throwing error, allowing Medeiros to come home with the run that gave the victory to starter Jeff Hawks (5-1).

In a game peppered with big innings - Franklin County scored six times in the first inning - Eagles reliever David Webster shut down Cave Spring (11-4, 8-2) on two hits and six strikeouts in the final three to earn a save.

For the Knights, Kevin Davis was 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI, and Dave Dunston went 3-for-4 with three RBI.

In other baseball:

Al Holland Jr. struck out nine in a four-hit shutout, as William Fleming won 11-0 at home against Patrick Henry in a Roanoke Valley District matchup. Michael Souma was 3-for-4 for the Colonels and Brian Short had two hits, including a two-run homer in the sixth for Fleming (3-12, 2-7).

Chris Carr improved its record to 9-0 with a complete-game, 10-strikeout performance and he helped himself with a three-run home run as William Byrd (15-0, 7-0) won 14-3 at Salem (7-5-1, 3-3-1) in a Blue Ridge District game. Chris Dudding had two hits for Salem (7-5-1, 3-3-1).

Glenvar ripped visiting James River 12-0 in a Pioneer District game. Glenvar (11-2-1, 8-0) were led by Joey Taylor, who pitched a two-hitter while striking out nine. Taylor also went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI. James River's record falls to 0-7 overall, 0-5 in the district.

In Lexington, Lord Botetourt held off a seventh-inning rally by Rockbridge County to beat the Wildcats 9-8 in a Blue Ridge District game. Lord Botetourt (7-5-1, 2-4-1) got two hits from Brian Davis. Jimmy Elmore had a pair of hits for Rockbridge County (7-8, 3-4-0).

Kameron Crowder was 3-for-3 with a home run and two RBI to lead Alleghany (9-4, 4-3) to a 13-5 Blue Ridge victory over Northside. Nolan Caldwell (5-3) pitched five scoreless innings for the Mountaineers. Mike Gibson homered for Northside.

\ SOFTBALL: In Vinton, William Byrd took a 5-0 lead after two innings then watched the tying run step to the plate in the seventh before edging Salem 5-4 in a Blue Ridge District game.

Tamasa Adams slugged a two-run homer in the first inning for William Byrd (12-1-1, 7-0). Salem (11-4, 5-2) scored a run in the fifth, then added three in the seventh. Tracy Doupnik (10-1) induced a groundout to end the game.

Ellen Brenner put North Cross (11-4, 8-0) ahead for good with an RBI triple in the bottom of the fifth inning, and the Raiders held on for a 12-10 victory over Roanoke Valley Christian (9-5, 5-2) to clinch first place in the Southern Division of the Blue Ridge Conference. Leslie Dodson had four hits for North Cross, which entertains Roanoke Catholic on Thursday in a first-round tournament game.

In Daleville, Lord Botetourt (6-5, 3-3) smashed Rockbridge County 16-1 in a Blue Ridge District game as Jamie Switzer tripled twice and knocked in three runs. Angie Secamiglio also had two hits and four RBI.

Glenvar (8-6-1, 5-2) gained revenge for an earlier loss by nipping visiting James River 4-3 in a Pioneer District game. Amy Layman stole third and scored the winning run on a wild throw, and Kelly Winter went 3-for-3. James River (12-2, 7-1) was led by Angie Sink, who went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI.

Northside defeated visiting Alleghany 5-2 in a Blue Ridge District game as Shannon Yopp struck out five and walked one in pitching a three-hitter. Northside is 8-4; Alleghany 4-10, 2-5.

In Staunton, eighth-grader Katie Dennehy struck out six and gave up three hits and one unearned run as Roanoke Catholic (1-10, 1-10) broke into the victory column in a big way with a 14-1 rout of Stuart Hall. Liz Landry had two hits and five RBI for Catholic.

\ BOYS' SOCCER: In Rocky Mount, Franklin County (7-2-4, 4-0-3) edged Patrick Henry 2-1 in a Roanoke Valley District game as Bradley Lang scored the winning goal with 18 minutes left to snap a 1-1 tie.

PH is 6-5-2, 4-1-1.

In Vinton, unbeaten William Byrd rocked Rockbridge County 10-1 to wrap up the Blue Ridge District regular-season championship and clinch a berth in the Region III tournament. Andy McCaskill, Michael Berry and Joe Cockfield scored three goals each for Byrd (12-0, 9-0).

At the River's Edge complex, Keith Cox scored four goals to lead Cave Spring (3-4-4, 3-2-2) past William Fleming 6-3 in a Roanoke Valley match. Kevin Graham had three goals for the Colonels (8-5, 2-5).

\ GIRLS' SOCCER: Brooke Henderson scored two goals and Patrick Henry (13-0) outshot North Cross 38-2 in a 5-0 victory. The Raiders are 7-7-1.

\ BOYS' TENNIS: Roanoke Valley Christian defeated North Cross 8-1 to give the Eagles their first Virginia Independent Conference Southern Division championship.

Wilson Pasley, Hampton Pasley, Simon Foster, Jay Plemmons and Mark DeLong won singles matches for RVC (11-0), and all five were on winning doubles teams.

Salem blanked Northside 9-0 and William Byrd beat Lord Botetourt 5-4 to advance to the final of the Blue Ridge District tournament. Singles semifinals begin at 4 p.m. today, followed by the doubles semifinals at the Salem Civic Center. The team finals will be played at 1 p.m. Thursday, followed by the singles and doubles championships.
