NORTHSIDE, SALEM TAKE TRACK TITLES

Northside, led by double winners Shawn Sprouse and Karim Thompson, captured the boys' crown, while Salem, paced by double winner Shanell Manning, won the girls' title in Wednesday's Blue Ridge District track and field meet at Salem.

Sprouse captured the 110-meter and 300 hurdles, while Thompson took the long jump and 400 run as the Vikings amassed 171 points in the boys' meet. Rockbridge County was second with 101. Salem and Lord Botetourt tied for third with 77 points. Alleghany (38) and William Byrd followed.

The only other multiple winner in the boys' meet was Salem's Marcus Parker, who won the shot put and 100.

Rockbridge's Marty Early went 45 feet, 6 3/4 inches in the triple jump to set the only meet record in the boys' division.

Manning was victorious in the 100 and 400 as Salem rolled up 144 points in the girls' meet. Northside was second with 79, with Lord Botetourt third with 74. Alleghany (67), William Byrd (53) and Rockbridge County (46) followed.

Northside's Emily Hollett was a double winner, capturing the long and triple jumps. Rockbridge's Jennifer Vest also won two events - the 200 and the 300 hurdles in a meet record time of 47 seconds.

The top six finishers in each event qualify for the Group AA Region III meet to be held May 21 at Salem.

In other high school sports:

BOYS' TRACK: William Fleming's Dominick Millner won the triple jump, long jump and 800, but Franklin County won the team competition with 80 points in a tri-meet at Pulaski County. David Angell won the 1,600 and 3,200 for the Eagles.

GIRLS' TRACK: Pam Jones won the 100 and 200 to lead Franklin County over William Fleming and Pulaski County in a tri-meet at Dublin. Pulaski County's Jennifer Pohlig won the 800 in 2:27, the fastest 800 time in Timesland this year.

BASEBALL: At Fries, Carroll County had an eight-run lead after 4 1/2 innings, but barely held off Grayson County to take a 9-7 non-district victory. The Cavliers (12-3), who got a three-run home run from Brian Hawks in the first inning, led 9-1 before Grayson County (10-5) scored five runs in the bottom of the fifth. Shane Widner belted a solo homer and Keith Weatherman added a two-run single to key the rally. The Blue Devils plated another run in the seventh and had runners on second and third before Carroll starter Kevin Dalton (5-0) got the last out. In outhitting Grayson 13-9, Carroll got two hits from Hawks, Tony Berrier, Jason Kilbourne, Willie Bryant and Ashley Primm. For Grayson, Bobby Cheeks homered and he, Widner and Brandon Ayers smacked two hits.

At Christiansburg, Denny Self hit his fifth and sixth home runs of the season - four of them coming in the past three games - and the Blue Demons (6-10) pushed five runs across in the second inning to get by Salem 9-7 in a non-district game. Brian Crosswhite and Chris Dudding had two hits for the Salem (7-6-1).

Curtis Nolan lofted a bases-loaded sacrifice fly that scored Brian Wiley with the winning run in the bottom of the seventh as James River (1-7, 1-6) beat Parry McCluer 4-3 in a Pioneer District game.

Chico Tolley (1-3) struck out seven in a complete-game 5-hitter and got offensive help from Lee Simpson, who had a triple and a single. J.D. Wheeler took the loss but had two hits for the Blues.

At Staunton River, Geoff Hill (2-2) carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning as the Golden Eagles (7-8) beat Nelson County 6-1. Jeff Woodford was 3-for-3 with two RBI for Staunton River. Nelson County is 7-8.

Chad Foutz fired a complete-game five-hitter and struck out nine as Franklin County (11-3, 9-1) moved a step closer to the Roanoke Valley District title with an 11-3 win at Pulaski County. Freddy McGhee was 2-for-4 with three RBI for the Eagles, who also got two hits from Foutz, Scott Lynch and Justin Sigmon. Pulaski County is 5-8, 2-6.

SOFTBALL: At Hillsville, Becky Quesenberry fired a two-hitter in the first game and Bridget Edwards had three hits and a home run in the second game as Carroll County (9-6) swept a non-district doubleheader from Graham 10-0 and 23-6. Graham is 4-7.

BOYS' SOCCER: Jon Freeman scored an unassisted goal 3 minutes, 27 seconds into the match and Blacksburg, behind goalkeeper Ben Pinkerton's seventh shutout, made it stand in a 1-0 victory over Cave Spring. Blacksburg is 12-0-1, Cave Spring is 3-5-4.

BOYS' TENNIS: Lord Botetourt's Jay Gilliland and Salem's Kevin Dahal advanced to the singles championship of the Blue Ridge District tournament at the Salem Civic Center. Gilliland beat Rockbridge County's Trevor Cox, 6-2, 6-1 and Dahal beat Miquel Castro of William Byrd 6-3, 7-6 (7-1).

In the doubles semifinals, Jay and Jamie Gilliland beat Bill Knisskern and Carey Mason of William Byrd, 6-4, 6-1, and Dahal and Jeff Henley beat Ben Cheatwood and Brian Agee of Northside, 6-2, 6-1.

Today at 1 p.m., Salem and William Byrd will play for the team title, followed by the singles and doubles championships.

Nick Varney and Josh Williamson maintained their unbeaten records in singles play and Glenvar improved to 10-0 with its 23rd straight regular-season victory by beating Auburn 8-1.

GOLF: North Cross won the Virginia Independent Conference tournament, firing a 20-over-par 304 at Countryside to edge Roanoke Valley Christian School by two shots. Carlisle (336), Randolph-Macon Academy (349), Fishburne Military (404), Hargrave Military (410) and Lynchburg Christian Academy (427) followed.

RVC's Benjy Kitts shot a 1-over 72 to take the individual medalist. Lee Shirley of North Cross beat RVC's Joe Surkamer in playoff for second place. Both shot 73s.

Brian Whitaker (76) of North Cross, Jay Draper (77) of Carlisle and Brandon LaCroix (77) of North Cross finished fourth through sixth. The top six finishers were named All-VIC.
