Chuck White, the football coach at Gar-Field High School, has been suspended with pay while an allegation of inappropriate behavior with at least one female student is investigated, said Prince William County Superintendent Edward L. Kelly.

The Potomac News and The Washington Post quoted unnamed sources as saying White's alleged impropriety was sexual and involved more than one student. Commonwealth's Attorney Paul B. Ebert and police spokeswoman Kim Chinn refused to provide details.

White, who has not been charged with a crime, declined to comment.

White, 38, guided the Woodbridge school to the Northwestern Region and Group AAA Division 6 titles in 1990. He also has taught science at Gar-Field since 1989.

Hampden-Sydney has received an invitation to participate in the NCAA Division III men's golf tournament Tuesday through May 20 in Fayetteville, N.C.

The Tigers are led by Berk Jolly, the Old Dominion Athletic Conference's co-player of the year, and fellow All-ODAC selection Eric Early. Left out of the NCAA Tournament was Washington and Lee, which won the ODAC tournament while Hampden-Sydney finished fourth.
