ROANOKE COUNTY POLICE MAY OPEN SHOP IN MALL

The Roanoke County Police Department is negotiating with Tanglewood Mall to open a police substation in a vacant storefront.

The substation, which would not be staffed all the time, would be in the former H&R Block office near Brendle's. The Police Department is negotiating with mall management to use the store through December for $1.

The police long have wanted a substation on that side of the county. Tanglewood Mall is a good location because of its high profile and large number of shoppers, Capt. Jack McCorkle said.

The contract has yet to be signed, but McCorkle hopes to have negotiations completed next week. He stressed that the substation will not be a done deal until then.

The substation would allow police officers to stop in at the mall to file reports. A community police officer who works with business on crime prevention also will use the location.

The Board of Supervisors on Tuesday approved a licensing agreement for the police to enter a contract with the mall. County Attorney Paul Mahoney raised concerns about part of the contract, which must be renegotiated.
