Robert E. Wells was being held without bail in the Campbell County Jail, said Capt. Mike Harris.
Witnesses told investigators that a man blocked a car on U.S. 29 near Spring Hill around 10:30 a.m. The man forced the woman, whom police would not identify, into his pickup truck with a handgun. Witnesses told police the vehicle's license number.
Lynchburg police and sheriffs' deputies from Bedford and Campbell counties were dispatched to Wells' home in Goode to search the premises. They found the truck identified by witnesses parked in the driveway. Wells was not there.
About 2 p.m., Wells returned home with the woman. He was arrested without incident and charged with abduction, Harris said. A handgun was found in the vehicle Wells was driving.
