Charlie Bates recently was elected president of the Roanoke Ski Club.
Other officers and directors include: Chris Pappas, vice president; Sherry Christensen, secretary; Dale Hoyt, treasurer; Roger Pomerenke, past director; Martin Etzler Jr., summer activities director; Ron Nemura, program director; Jim Beamer, trip director; and Gordon Hamilton, membership director.
The club, which has 317 members, has been in existence 31 years. In addition to annual ski trips and a ski show, the clubs holds outings in the spring, summer and fall.

AARP gives service award to Roanoker
Doris Humphreys received a 1994 National Community Service Award from the American Association of Retired Persons for her outstanding volunteer contributions.
Humphreys, an employee of the Roanoke City Recreation Department, is the director of the AARP Clown Cut-Ups. This local troupe of 15 clowns entertains nursing home residents, pre-schoolers and church groups.
The award recognizes volunteer service of one person or more from each of the association's more than 4,000 chapters.
