ARMY RESERVE SFC. HAROLD VANHUSS SR. of Lantern Street recently received his 20-year letter in recognition of his two decades of service.

Vanhuss also recently received a 20-year award from Yokohama Rubber Co.

ARMY SGT. HAROLD VANHUSS JR., son of Brenda and Harold Vanhuss Sr. of Lantern Street, was recently promoted to his present rank while stationed at Fort Knox, Ky.

Vanhuss is a 1989 graduate of Northside High School

PETTY OFFICER FIRST CLASS MARILYN H. SINOHUI, daughter of Calvin E. Huffman of 7611 Wineberry Trail and Margaret E. Roden of 4459 Keefer Road, has re-enlisted for six years in the Navy and reported to Naval Air Station, Pensacola, Fla.

Sinohui is a 1992 graduate of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, Fla.

PFC. CHRISTOPHER W. SWEET, son of Robert W. and Brenda M. Sweet of 2614 Dorchester Drive, recently completed recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S.C., and received a promotion to his present rank.

Sweet is a graduate of William Fleming High School.

PFC. MICHAEL B. MILLS, son of Richard L. and Emily T. Mills of 8083 Deer Branch Drive, recently completed recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S.C., and received a promotion to his present rank.

PVT. CHARLES G. SHARP, son of Gregory H. and Nancy M. Sharp of Catawba, recently completed recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S.C.

SEAMAN BYRON L. MANN, son of Willie A. Smith Jr. of 1719 Staunton Ave. and Laurel B. Williams of 748 30th St., recently reported for duty aboard the USS McKee, based in San Diego, Calif.

PETTY OFFICER FIRST CLASS THOMAS E. BUSH recently departed for a six-month deployment to the Mediterranean Sea aboard the guided missile cruiser USS Vicksburg, based in Mayport, Fla.

NAVY PETTY OFFICER 2ND CLASS DARRELL R. HIX, son of Johnny B. Hix of Roanoke and Catherine A. Hix of Fincastle, recently was selected Sailor of the Quarter with the Naval Surface Force, Atlantic, Performance Monitoring Team in Norfolk.

The honor recognizes outstanding professional accomplishment, proficiency, leadership, initiative and military bearing.

MARINE PFC. ANDREW T. FOWLER, son of Dan M. Fowler of Orchard Hill Road, recently completed recruit training at Parris Island, S.C., and was promoted to his present rank.

MARINE LANCE CPL. ANDREW B. HALL, son of Jerry D. Hall of 5527 Twilight Road and Rebecca B. Hall of 1772 Timberline Trail, recently reported for duty in Okinawa, Japan. He is a 1984 graduate of Cave Spring High School.

NAVY SEAMAN CHRISTOPHER L. ZAYAS, son of Angel R. and Karen H. Zayas of 4929 Woodmar Drive, recently completed basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.

NAVY SEAMAN RECRUIT JASON B. CRADDOCK, son of Sharon G. Brown of 4960 Glade Creek Road, recently completed basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.

CPL. LLOYD B. TERRY, son of Barbara Terry of 1526 Syracuse Ave. N.W., was recently promoted to his present rank while serving at the Marine Corps Air Station at Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii.

PVT. SHAWN A. TONEY, son of Roger D. and Elizabeth D. Campbell of 8202 Olsen Road, recently completed recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S.C.

NAVY SEAMAN RECRUIT ERIC L. DOLUMBA, son of Edward S. and Patricia L. Dolumba of Vinton, recently completed basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.

NAVY PETTY OFFICER 1ST CLASS WALTER T. POWELL, son of Walter T. Powell Jr. of 7913 Olsen Road N.W., recently received the Navy Achievement Medal.

The medal is in recognition of outstanding accomplishments, achievements and devotion to duty.

Powell is serving with Naval Air Maintenance Training Group, Naval Air Station Miramar, San Diego.

AIR FORCE AIRMAN 1ST CLASS WESLEY H. MOORE, whose wife, Dana, is the daughter of George W. and Mary Cox of 3365 Dawn Circle, has been named Air Intelligence Squadron airman of the quarter.

Moore is an apprentice electronic intelligence operations specialist.

ARMY PVT. CYNTHIA L. SHEPARD, daughter of Frances E. Garrett of Roanoke, recently completed basic training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C.

AIR FORCE AIRMAN ANGEL L. MOTLEY, daughter of Harold L. Motley of Mercer Avenue and Gloria A. Motley of Delta Street, recently graduated from basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio.

Motley is a 1993 graduate of William Fleming High School.

LANCE CPL. JOHN M. MOREFIELD, son of Jim E. Morefield of Fincastle, was selected as the distinguished graduate for the Basic Engineer Equipment Operator Course at Marine Corps Engineer School, Camp Lejeune, N.C. and was awarded a meritorious mast.

A meritorious mast is an official recognition from a Marine's commanding officer for superior individual performance.

SEAMAN RECRUIT BENJAMIN E. SMITH, son of Patricia Eckert of 4250 Pippin St., finished basic training at Recruit Training Command in Great Lakes, Ill.

FIRST SGT. ROBERT A. CANNADAY, son of Charles J. and Yvette Cannaday of 106 Rainbow Forest Drive, recently received the Navy Commendation Medal.

Cannaday received the award for superior performance while serving as detachment commander of a Marine security guard unit in Tokyo, Japan.

Cannaday, a Patrick Henry High School graduate, is stationed at Camp Pendleton, Calif.

LANCE CPL. DAVID BRIAN TURNER, son of David and Bettie Turner of 4734 Arnold Drive N.E., recently received a commendation for outstanding service in the field from the commanding officer of 1st Battalion, 12th Marines. He is stationed in Hawaii.

Turner is a 1992 graduate of William Fleming High School.7

PFC. JAMES A. CALDWELL, son of Clarence L. Caldwell Jr. and Mildred M. Wingold, both of Roanoke, recently completed Marine recruit training and was promoted to his present rank.

SEAMAN RECRUIT RANDALL L. ZIRKLE of Roanoke recently completed basic training at Recruit Training Command in Great Lakes, Ill.

Zirkle is a 1993 graduate of Northside High School.

STAFF SGT. LONNIE GROSS of Roanoke has received the Navy achievement medal. He was recognized for superior performance while serving with Station Operations and Engineering Station at Marine Corps Air Station in Cherry Point, N.C.

AIRMAN JASON S. SPENCER, son of John D. and Frances S. Spencer of 4839 Player Drive, has graduated from Air Force basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas.

Spencer is a 1991 graduate of William Fleming High School.

PVT. MONTE R. KEELING, son of Barbara A. Keeling of 2746 Cove Road and William R. Keeling of 928 Peyton St., has graduated from Army basic training at Fort Jackson, S.C.

Keeling is a 1990 graduate of Northside High School.

AIRMAN GREGORY S. HASTON, son of Larry P. and Arcelia B. Haston of 2642 Sanderson Drive, Troutville, has graduated from Air Force Basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas.

Haston is a 1992 graduate of Lord Botetourt High School.

AIRMAN MICHAEL E. BECKNER, son of Cathy J. Miller of 1210 Second St., Blue Ridge, has graduated from Air Force basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas.

Beckner is a 1993 graduate of Lord Botetourt High School.
