W&L WINS NCAA MATCH

In Kalamazoo, Mich., Washington and Lee won five of six singles matches to defeat Cal-Santa Cruz 6-3 in the consolation round of the NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Championships on Thurdsay.

Marilyn Baker led the way, beating Megan Temple 6-3, 6-0 to record her school-record 26th victory of the season. Baker (26-2) bettered the mark set in 1991 by Genia Foster.

Baker and teammate Julie Ayers begin play Saturday in the singles tournament.

In other sports in the region:

Florida State's Bobby Cochran, the conference player of the year, highlighted the golfers selected to the 1994 All-ACC men's golf team. A University of Virginia player, Simon Cooke, also was among the honorees.

The 10-member team, selected by a vote of the league's nine head coaches, includes two players each from Florida State, Georgia Tech and Wake Forest, and one each from Maryland, North Carolina, North Carolina State and Virginia.

Cochran won the Dixie Intercollegiate, held in Columbus, Ga., and the Imperia Lakes Classic in Mulberry, Fla.

Christian Raynor was Florida State's other All-ACC selection. Other team members were Mikko Rantanen and Stewart Cink of Georgia Tech; Ron Whittaker and Kevin Kemp from Wake Forest; Maryland's Del Ponchock; North Carolina State's Mark Slawter; North Carolina's Rob Bradley; and Cooke.

Justin Roof of Wake Forest is rookie of the year.

Maryland's Tom Hanna is coach of the year. He guided the Terrapins to three top-five finishes, including the ACC Tournament, and two top-10 finishes.
