W&L WOMEN WIN MATCH AT NCAA

Washington and Lee won five of six singles matches to defeat Cal-Santa Cruz 6-3 in the consolation round of the NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Championships on Thursday in Kalamazoo, Mich.

Marilyn Baker led the way, beating Megan Temple 6-3, 6-0 to record her school-record 26th victory of the season. Baker (26-2) bettered the mark set in 1991 by Genia Foster.

Baker and Generals teammate Julie Ayers begin play Saturday in the singles tournament.
