BLUE DEMONS ROLL TO TRACK TITLE

Christiansburg rolled to its fifth straight New River District championship behind an outstanding performance from Andra Beasley Wednesday at Radford High.

Beasley won five events - the triple jump, long jump, shot put, 100 and 200 - and also had a hand in the Blue Demons' winning 400 relay team. Beasley personally was responsible for 52 1/2 of the winners' 234 points. Radford finished second with 103 points, followed by Blacksburg (68) and Carroll County (52).

GIRLS' TRACK: At Radford on Maureen Jackson captured the discus and shot put, leading Christiansburg to victory. The Blue Demons finished with 163 points to nip second-place Radford by five points. Blacksburg (101) was third and Carroll County (32) fourth. Blacksburg's Shelly Stevens also was a double winner, taking the 100 and 300 hurdles.

BOYS TENNIS: Blacksburg made a clean sweep of the New River District tournament at Radford University's Dedmon Center.

In the team competition, the Indians routed Christiansburg 8-1. Robert Gibb nailed down the individual singles crown with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Christiansburg's Jesse McHose. Gibb then teamed with Justin Turner to whip McHose and Greg Habeeb 6-2, 6-3 in individual doubles.

The Indians plus their individual champions advance to the Group AA Region IV tournament that starts next week. Blacksburg will travel to Highlands District champion Virginia High.

The team and individual winners will play at Graham May 24.

GIRLS TENNIS: Radford's first victory over Blacksburg this season dwarfed two previous defeats.

Thanks to a couple of late doubles victories, the Bobcats edged the Indians 5-4 at Radford University's Dedmon Center.

With the score 3-3, Radford got a break when No. 1 doubles team Cathy Richardson and Ashleigh Funk won by forfeit over Emily Gibb and Stephanie Read because Read could not continue because of an injury. Then, the Radford's No. 3 team of Mandy Harless and Leslie Adkins beat Judith Dunai and Mandy Foulk for the first time this year, this time 6-3, 6-4.

Radford, which won for the 13th time in 14 years, draws a bye in the first round of the Group AA Region IV tournament and will entertain the survivor of a match between the Southwest and Highlands District champions May 24 at the Dedmon Center.

BASEBALL: At Narrows, Green Wave slugger Whitey Blankenship was 3-for-3 with two home runs, five RBI, five runs scored and two stolen bases to lead Narrows (10-4, 6-2) to an 18-8 win over Galax in a Mountain Empire District game.

Brian Snidow 3-for-4 for the Green Wave, and Jeff White and Jason Shipbaugh had two hits. Tim Dyers homered for Galax (5-10, 4-5).

Tournament games will be played May 17 and 18 at 6 p.m. The Cougars are 5-8 and 1-7.
