Virginia is one of nine teams from last year's NCAA Tournament in the field. The others are 1988 Preseason NIT champion Syracuse, Alabama, George Washington, Penn, Ohio U., Southwestern Louisiana, New Mexico and New Mexico State.
Four teams that played in the postseason NIT were invited - Canisius, Old Dominion, Kansas State and Southern Cal. San Francisco, Ohio State and Memphis State complete the field, with the latter two the only teams in the field with sub-.500 records last season.
The first two rounds are played at campus sites; the first round on Nov. 16-17, the second on Nov. 18-19. The semifinals and finals are at Madison Square Garden in New York on Nov. 23 and 25, respectively. Pairings will be announced later.
