The Small-Business Person of the Year will be named at the annual Small-Business Awards Luncheon, to be sponsored by the Roanoke Regional Chamber of Commerce and the Small-Business Development Center. The noon event at the Roanoke Airport Marriott hotel is open to the public. Cost is $15 per person, and reservations can be made by calling 983-0717.
There are 26 nominees for the top award, and the winner will contend for the Virginia award. Two people are nominated for the small-business exporter of the year, and awards also will be given to operators of companies in five categories: manufacturing, wholesale and retail trade, construction and contracting, service, and companies with five or fewer employees.
Nominees for the small-business person of the year are:
Lyle Anderson, David Schoonover and Larry Sharpe of CWC Enterprises. The Roanoke company is a conglomerate of three companies that package and distribute herbicides.
Carroll E. Bowyer of Thermo King of Roanoke Inc. Thermo King of Roanoke is the local sales and service arm of Thermo King Corp., a manufacturer of truck refrigeration systems.
Jerry W. Brinkley of Virginia Carolina Belting, a distributor of industrial rubber products.
Stephanie Burkholder of Surfaces, a wholesaler and installer of commercial floor and wall coverings.
Pamela L. Corcoran of Crystal Spring Linen Service Inc. The commercial laundry provides health care and diaper services in western Virginia.
Nichola DesChamps of DesChamps Laboratories Inc., a manufacturer of heat exchangers for industrial, commercial and residential applications, as well as recovery systems for the applications.
Randall H. Frazier of R. Frazier Inc. The company recycles and exports computers and telecommunications equipment parts.
David L. Hutchinson of Valley Distributing Corp., which supplies bottled water and beer.
Daniel Jarrett of Jarrett Electric Co. Jarrett's company is a commercial and industrial electrical contractor.
Robert C. Jones of Air Lee Cleaners, which has five Roanoke Valley locations.
Michael E. Levan of Virginia Building Services, a class A general contractor specializing in insurance claims and disaster work.
Richard H. Macher of Macado's Inc. Macado's operates restaurants in central and southwest Virginia, West Virginia and North Carolina.
Robert Martin of Earth Reach Environmental Consultants, which provides environmental, engineering and consulting services.
Don W. McCray, Gary C. Mitchell and Joe D. Parker of Office Suppliers Inc. The company sells office supplies and furniture within a 100-mile radius of Roanoke.
Carl McCurdy of Beltone Hearing Aids. The Roanoke company is a retailer of hearing aids in Virginia and West Virginia.
Jim Morrison of Morrison Mechanical & Building Services, a complete building services contractor for commercial and industrial projects.
Roger R. Neel Jr. and F. Alan Pollard II of Corned Beef & Co., a downtown Roanoke restaurant.
Nick Nicklas of Moody Graphics Color Service Inc., which serves advertising agencies, corporate printers, publishers and catalog producers.
Wade L. Pollard and Barry Sarver of Architectural Concrete Products Inc. The company provides custom-made architectural precast concrete work in the Roanoke Valley.
Joseph E. Proctor of Capital Equipment Sales, a company involved in the retailing, servicing, engineering and application of mechanical machinery.
Judy Mills Reimer and George Reimer of Harris Office Furniture, a Roanoke office furniture dealer and designer.
Stephen H. Sewell of Sewell Products Inc. The company manufactures private label bleach products.
Anthony Morris Tate of the Sole Man, a Roanoke Valley shoe repair and shoe care products retailer.
Elaine Vaughn of Love Baskets Ltd., a company that creates and designs gift baskets and floral arrangements.
