SKUNDA PROMISES STATE'S HELP

Virginia's Secretary of Commerce and Trade Robert Skunda, speaking Thursday to a group of Roanoke Valley small-business leaders, outlined the Allen administration's programs aimed at helping. Among them:

Recommending that all new state regulations be evaluated for their economic impact, similar to environmental impact studies that have been required for years.

Increasing the number of enterprise zones in the state. There are 25 enterprise zones, where businesses can win tax breaks in exchange for providing jobs. Gov. George Allen and Skunda would like the number doubled.

Encouraging Virginia businesses to expand their markets to include overseas countries whose economies are expanding more rapidly than the domestic market.
