TERRIERS KICK TO 13-0 RECORD

William Byrd put the finishing touches on an unbeaten regular season record by pounding Lord Botetourt 7-1 in a Blue Ridge District boys' soccer match Thursday on the Terriers' field.

The Terriers (13-0, 10-0), who won their ninth straight district championship, got three goals from Andy McCaskill and two from Michael Berry.

In other soccer:

Shane Duddy scored two goals, and Mike Kolnok had 10 saves in Roanoke Catholic's 5-0 non-conference win at Massanutten. The Celtics are 8-8.

Jack Edwards scored both goals as Patrick Henry blanked William Fleming 2-0 in a Roanoke Valley District game at River's Edge Sports Complex. PH is 6-5-2 overall, 5-1-1 in the district. Fleming is 8-6, 2-6.

Ryan Reeves, Brian Jones, Owen Woodward and Andrew Bailey each scored as Salem defeated host Northside 4-0 in a Blue Ridge District boys' soccer game. With the victory, the Spartans advance to district playoffs, held May 16, 18 and 19 at Lord Botetourt.

GIRLS SOCCER: Meredith Hartless scored the only goal on an assist from Heather Moore with 4 minutes, 30 seconds left as Salem beat Cave Spring. For Salem (3-6-1), which finished its season, goal keeper Angie Divers stopped 16 shots.

Emily Cook scored twice and had two assists and four North Cross players - Amber Jackson, Whitney Watson, Erin Strulson, and Essra Dillaha - each scored their first goals of the season as the Raiders beat host Magna Vista 6-0.

SOFTBALL: James River's Amber Vines' two-run double in the fourth inning gave the Knights a comfortable lead and they went on to beat guest Parry McCluer 9-5, clinching at least a tie for the Pioneer District regular season title.

Jessica Thompson fired a one-hitter, and Ashley Moore had a single and a double to put Lord Botetourt (7-5, 4-3) past Northside 9-2 in a Blue Ridge District game.

Laura Houston went 3-for-4 and had two RBI as North Cross defeated Roanoke Catholic 11-1 in a first-round Blue Ridge Conference game that was called after five innings because of the slaughter rule.

Jenny Coons went 3-for-3 with a triple, and Amy Ford went 2-for-2 with two triples as Roanoke Valley Christian routed Timberlake Christian 10-0 in a first-round Blue Ridge Conference game.

BOYS TENNIS: Salem won its fifth straight Blue Ridge District championship by blanking William Byrd 9-0 in the tournament finals at the Salem Civic Center. Salem (13-1), which hosts the Region III tournament May 19-20, got singles wins from Kevin Dalal, Jeff Henley, Will Wimmer, Jon Valera, Peter Moran and Mark Byington. Doubles wins came from the tandems of Henley-Scott Ripley, Valera-Byington, and Clint Hager-Peter Moran

Lord Botetourt's Jay Gilliland claimed the singles championship by beating Dalal 6-1, 6-0.The Gilliland brothers, Jay and Jamey, beat Dalal and Henley 6-1, 6-4 in the doubles finals.

At Radford University's Dedmon Center courts, Patrick Henry's Andrew Thomas defeated Pulaski County's Mitch Gilmore and Cave Spring's Randy Price to win the Roanoke Valley District singles championship. Thomas beat Gilmore 6-2 6-3 in the semifinals and downed Price 6-2, 6-2 to take the title. Price beat William Fleming's Albert Collier 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 in the other semifinal. Thomas will play in the Northwestern Region tournament May 23-25 at River's Edge. In RVD doubles semifinals, Patrick Henry's Greg McCray and Addams England defeated Gilmore and Matt Gardner of Pulaski County 6-1, 4-6, 6-2, and will meet Cave Spring's Price and Jason Bialek, who beat Collier and Roderick Allen of Fleming 3-6, 6-4, 6-1. The doubles finals will be played today at Radford at 1 p.m., followed by the team semifinals.

Glenvar (11-0) completed an unbeaten regular season by beating North Cross 5-4. Nick Varney upped his singles record to 11-0, and Josh Williamson improved to 9-0.

BASEBALL: Scott Hayes tossed a five-hitter with 11 strikeouts and went 2-for-4 with four RBI to lead North Cross (4-9) to an 18-1 win at Carlisle. Jason Davis was 2-for-4 with two RBI and Trey Mangus had a three-run triple.

LACROSSE: Goalie Jeff Walrond made 22 saves and was voted most valuable player as Cave Spring defeated Salem 5-1 at the Veterans' Medical Center in Salem to capture the Roanoke Valley District championship. Five different players scored for the Knights (9-2-1). The Spartans finished the season 7-4.
