CARROLL COUNTY CLAIMS NEW RIVER BASEBALL TITLE

At Radford, Carroll County used a six-run sixth inning Friday to earn a 7-4 New River District baseball victory over the Bobcats and clinch the district championship.

Ashley Primm's two-run single tied the score and Eric Spencer's triple gave Carroll County (13-3 overall, 4-1 district) the lead. Travis Griffith had two RBI for Radford (8-9, 3-2).

In other baseball:

At Fries, freshman flame-thrower Wes Self fired a one-hitter for his seventh win in eight decisions as Grayson County ripped Giles County 10-0 in the Mountain Empire District. Self, who pitched a no-hitter earlier this season, struck out eight and walked only one.

In Bedford, Liberty rallied for a 5-4 Seminole District victory over Staunton River. The Golden Eagles (7-9 overall and district) blew a 4-0 lead. Jaimie Dooley had a solo home run for Liberty (6-10), which took the lead in the sixth on Brian Long's RBI single and David Overstreet's sacrifice fly that scored Johnny Cash. Cash pitched a complete game, striking out seven and walking two.

In Christiansburg, Denny Self combined with reliever Byron Gates on a one-hitter and had a hand in the offense as the Blue Demons defeated Blacksburg 7-3 in the New River District.

Self (3-3) went 2-for-4 with two RBI, and Brock Keister was 3-for-4 with two RBI for Christiansburg (7-10, 2-3).

In Pulaski, Seth Callis' career-high 14-strikeout performance helped Patrick Henry break a seven-game losing streak with a 7-4 victory over Pulaski County in a Roanoke Valley District game.

Callis, a junior lefthander, allowed one earned run. His two-run single in the top of the seventh gave PH, which had led 5-1, its three-run cushion. The Patriots are 3-13 overall and 3-7 in the district.

Danny Dickerson hit an RBI-single in the bottom of the seventh inning to give Auburn a 13-12 win over Floyd County as the two teams split a Mountain Empire District doubleheader at Riner. The Buffaloes won the second game 9-1.

Dickerson went 3-for-4 with a home run and five RBI to lead the Eagles in the first game. Pitcher Bradley Hudgins went 3-for-3 with three doubles and two RBI and John Lytton smacked a two-run homer.

Chuck Blackwell had four RBI to lead Floyd County at the plate and teammate Josh Howery blasted a two-RBI home run.

In the second game, Ken Harmon went 2-for-2 and threw a three-hitter for Floyd County. Peter Buckland had one RBI and scored two runs for the Buffaloes.

In Rocky Mount, Drew Bohanan's 5-hitter led Halifax County to a 5-1 non-district victory over Franklin County. Bohanon struck out seven and walked one for Halifax (12-4). For Franklin County (11-4), Isaac Medeiros pitched three innings of scoreless relief, striking out eight of the 13 batters he faced.

\ SOFTBALL: In Moneta, Joann Harris' two-run homer helped Liberty beat Staunton River 4-1 in a Seminole District game. Selena Byers was 2-for-3 for Liberty (12-4). Sherry Simmons was 2-for-3 with a solo home run for Staunton River (7-9).

\ SOCCER: Blacksburg and Patrick Henry tied 1-1 after two overtimes. Cannon Helscher scored for PH on an assist from Jesse Dunker 27 minutes into the first half. Josh Powell tied the score for Blacksburg (12-0-2) in the second half at the 53-minute mark on an assist from Gregg Adamo.

In Radford, Christiansburg's Sam Nokuri scored a short-handed goal early in the second overtime as the Demons beat Radford 2-1 in a New River District game. Christiansburg (9-5) lost a player when Don Haga was red-carded for a shoving incident. But Nokuri ended the game on a breakaway. Jason Randolph scored the Demons' other goal, and John Quesenberry scored for Radford.

\ TRACK AND FIELD: In Pearisburg, Floyd County's Monica Lucas set two records during the Mountain Empire District track meet at Giles High School, posting a 34-foot effort in the triple jump and a 12.7-second time in the 100 meter run.

Other girls records set or tied: Narrows' Melinda Fleeman in the shot put (38 feet, 6 1/2 inches); Giles' Tomika Saunders in the 200 meters (26.3 seconds); and Floyd's Sara Fralin in the high jump (tied, 5-0).

In the boys' competition, Auburn's V.J. Lumina won four events and set a district record by clearing 6 feet, 3 inches in the high jump; Ben Cooke ran the 1,600 meters in 4:39.3 to set a district mark.
