WILLIAM BYRD CLINCHES DISTRICT BASEBALL CROWN

William Byrd clinched the Blue Ridge District regular-season baseball championship Friday in Vinton with a 19-2 rout of Northside.

Mike McGuire pitched five innings for the victory and hit a solo home run. Jason Porter was 3-for-3 with an RBI, and Tim Sink and Ryan Caya each drove in two runs. Northside is 1-7 in the district.

In other baseball:

In New Castle, Glenvar's Jason Anderson shut out Craig County for a 9-0 Pioneer District victory. Anderson walked two, struck out 15 and allowed five hits, three to Craig County's Mike All. The Highlanders' four-run fifth inning was keyed by David Henderson's two-run single. Glenvar is 12-2-1 overall and 9-0 in the district; the Rockets are 6-10 and 5-6.

In Pulaski, Seth Callis' career-high 14-strikeout performance helped Patrick Henry break a seven-game losing streak with a 7-4 win over Pulaski County in a Roanoke Valley District game.

Callis, a junior left-hander, allowed one earned run. His two-run single in the top of the seventh gave PH its three-run cushion. The Patriots are 3-13 overall and 3-7 in the district.

Cave Spring used an 11-run inning to pull away for a 16-3 triumph over visiting William Fleming in the Roanoke Valley District.

The Knights (12-4, 9-2) were leading 5-3 heading into the bottom of the sixth. They sent 15 batters to the plate, pounding out 10 hits - including a homer and three doubles.

Doug Popik (3-for-4 with a homer and four RBI) and David Dunston (3-for-4, two RBI) led the hit parade for Cave Spring. Brent Shorter (2-0) struck out seven to pick up the victory.

Fleming's record fell to 2-14 and 2-8.

In Daleville, Kameron Crowder hit a solo homer and David Dixon added a three-run shot to spark a nine-run second inning that carried Alleghany to a 12-3 victory over Lord Botetourt in the Blue Ridge District.

Pat Hall pitched six innings to pick up the victory for the Mountaineers (10-4, 5-3). He gave up four hits and struck out seven. Lord Botetourt's record slipped to 7-6-1 and 2-5-1.

\ SOFTBALL: At Northside, William Byrd pitcher Tracy Doupkin shut down the Vikings 9-1 in a Blue Ridge District game. Doupkin improved her record to 11-1. Wendy Hayden had two hits and an RBI and Heather Ring two hits for the Terriers (14-1-1 overall, 8-0 district). Erin Weaver had three hits for Northside (9-6, 2-4).

Shannon Slovensky pitched a two-hit shutout as Cave Spring beat William Fleming 15-0 in a Roanoke Valley District game.

Ellen Jamison went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer and Mary Margaret McCann was 2-for-3 with two RBI for the Knights (11-5, 5-2).

At Alleghany, Mandy Sowers and Susan Wyche each had two RBI as Lord Botetourt beat Alleghany 14-6 in a Blue Ridge District game.

Botetourt improved to 7-5 overall and 4-3 in the district. Alania Bartley had two RBI for Alleghany (5-11, 2-8).

At River's Edge, Franklin County's Shannon Conley threw a two-hitter and drove in two runs to lead the Eagles to a 10-3 victory over Patrick Henry Roanoke Valley District game.

Amy Mullins had three RBI for Franklin County (9-7, 5-2). PH is 5-11 and 3-4.

\ SOCCER: Blacksburg and Patrick Henry tied 1-1 after two overtimes. Cannon Helscher scored for PH on an assist from Jesse Dunker 27 minutes into the first half. Josh Powell tied the score for Blacksburg (12-0-2) in the second half at the 53-minute mark on an assist from Gregg Adamo.

\ TENNIS: Patrick Henry and Cave Spring boys' tennis teams meet 10 a.m. today at River's Edge to decide the Roanoke Valley District team championship. PH beat William Fleming 6-3 and Cave Spring defeated Franklin County 8-1 in Friday's semifinals at Radford University.

In Friday's doubles championship, Cave Spring's Randy Price and Jason Bialek beat PH's Addams England and Greg McCray 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.
